BREAKING: The US is officially closing its last major military base in Iraq after spending more than 23 years and $1.7 trillion in the country.

A US defense official said the military is airlifting its last equipment and personnel out of Erbil, the last US base in Iraq.

Some US Marines will remain to protect American "diplomatic missions," along with contractors to maintain Iraq’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets and American-made tanks.

"We don’t think we need the military there anymore," Trump said.

The market will heavily discount today's PCE inflation data.

Why? Because the US just changed the way PCE inflation is calculated:

Beginning with today’s release, the US changed the methodology for 3 key PCE inflation categories and revised data back to 2021:

1. Portfolio management/investment advice
2. Computer software/accessories
3. Legal services

The biggest change is in portfolio management fees. Under the old methodology, rising asset values could show up partly as higher "prices" for portfolio management services.

For example, if an adviser charged 1% of assets and the portfolio rose 20%, the dollar fee would rise 20% even though the adviser did not raise the 1% fee.

The new methodology uses an employment-based measure to estimate the quantity of services, reducing the amount of the increase that is classified as inflation.

For software, the US now uses a broader composite. For legal services, an unpublished CPI series is being replaced because it had become "unusually volatile."

We estimate the methodology alone could reduce Core PCE inflation by up to 20 basis points.

In the PCE inflation data released just now, both headline and Core PCE inflation were revised down by 30 basis points for July.

We do not interpret the entire 30 basis point drop as disinflation.

Part of it is literally a measurement change.

🚨🇺🇸 Christa Pike's execution in Tennessee went horribly wrong after 2 lethal injections failed to stop her heart.

She was rushed to hospital, where her lawyers say she's getting life-saving care.

A medical expert hired by her legal team warns she could now have a brain injury, and her lawyers say the state "once again failed to carry out a lawful execution."

Media witnesses say Pike was snoring and breathing loudly for almost an hour after the injections, and that she told her spiritual adviser the vein in her arm felt like it was about to burst.

Pike, 50, spent nearly 30 years on death row for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom she beat and tortured to death at a job training camp for troubled teens when she was 18.

Prosecutors said she carved a pentagram into Slemmer's body and kept a piece of her skull as a souvenir.

She was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.

The U.S. Supreme Court shot down 2 last-minute bids to stop the execution, only for the state to fail on its own.

Inflation numbers came out today, and the official story is that inflation went down. What the headline number doesn't tell you is that the government changed how inflation is calculated in the same release. A month ago, they said July inflation was 3.7%. Today, they recalculated July with the new formula and it dropped to 3.36%. If you measure August the same way as the months before it, inflation comes out around 3.8%, which means it went up. They didn't bring inflation down, they just changed how they calculate it.
Bessent did something similar with CPI last month. You only modify the way you calculate if they numbers are that bad. They genuinely thought we wouldn't notice...

🇺🇸 Trump just started mailing $500 ObamaCare refund checks to nearly 1 million Americans.

The White House says they were overcharged through HealthCare(dot)gov, and the money is coming from a $500 million pot of leftover fees.

More than 950,000 people across 30 states are getting a check, with Texas and Florida getting the most.

But it's a pretty specific group. If the government already helps pay your premium, or your state runs its own ObamaCare marketplace, no check for you.

The checks always seem to arrive right before an election though, don't they? 😂
