We will never forget the innocent murdered by the terrorist attacks 9/11/01. We will never forget the acts of heroism and selflessness exhibited by first responders and civilians to help their fellow Americans that day and the years that followed.

But we must remember the sacrifices, the pain, heartbreak and suffering continues today. Two years we posted a photo from the Officer Down Memorial Page of the law enforcement officers who lost their lives due to 9-11 including 9-11 related illnesses. The count was approximately 390.

Today, the count is 551. Over 160 additional officers have made the ultimate sacrifice for their work during and after those attacks.

The Kauai Police Commission released the results of Gallup's survey of all KPD employees. The results reinforce SHOPO’s 2022 survey: near-universal concern and dissatisfaction with the department's leadership and direction. Fire season is upon us, and Maui police officers still do not have the safety equipment they need to respond to fire emergencies and other natural disasters. Maui PD’s “after action report” recommended “GoBags” stocked with the appropriate equipment, but our officers still do not have them. And as you see in this story, MPD can't say what equipment they will provide, how much it costs, or when our officers will get them. But they sure had a lot of detail when they wanted to buy a helicopter on a whim.

Tafokitau started his morning by shooting his ex-girlfriend. Then, he carjacked an innocent woman. He repeatedly shot at officers. He was already wanted for stabbing a man and shooting at a group of people in December when he was out on bail for weapons charges.

Two Honolulu Police Department Officers were shot while attempting to apprehend an armed suspect today. The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers issued this statement.

After 20 years of service, Officer Cerilo Agarano suffered a fatal heart attack while on an undercover assignment in a remote area of Wailuku. He was survived by his wife, 4-year-old twin daughters, and grown son.

Officer Barboza was an undercover officer and had arrested a drug dealing suspect after making a cocaine purchase. After the suspect was released from jail, he found where Officer Barboza lived, went to his apartment, and shot and killed him with a shotgun.

Officer Roy Thurman was killed in a motorcycle crash while on patrol on Kalanianaole Highway. Officer Thurman had served the Honolulu Police Department for 6 years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.

Officer William Kama was killed while attempting to break up an argument between two women and two soldiers, one of whom pulled a pistol and shot Officer Kama, killing him instantly. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Officer Robert Corter was killed in an automobile crash while pursuing a person wanted on a warrant. His vehicle struck a wall separating the Pali Tunnels on Pali Highway. Officer Corter had been with the department for four years.

Officer Eric Fontes was struck and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Farrington Highway by a 21-yr old driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel. Officer Fontes served Honolulu PD for 7 years and is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Today, we remember those who died in the attack on our country, the 1st responders who charged into danger to save others, & those who sorted through the rubble to rescue and recover, ultimately giving their lives. We honor them by sacrificing daily to protect our communities.

Officer George Rogers was killed when his police motorcycle struck an open manhole cover on King Street, throwing him from his motorcycle. He had served with the Honolulu Police Department for two years and was survived by his wife and 14 children.

Officer Randal Young, a Vietnam War veteran, was killed when he was struck by a car during a traffic stop on Pali Highway. He was survived by his daughter, brother, sister, and father.
