जब ब्राह्मण समाज की लड़कियों के लिए कुछ लोग बड़ी-बड़ी बातें कहते हैं, “मुझे तो ब्राह्मण की लड़की चाहिए”, तो सवाल ये है कि लड़की ले लेने से क्या लड़का भी ब्राह्मण हो जाता है?

अंबेडकर की पत्नी ब्राह्मण थीं। हमारे कन्नौज के विधायक-मंत्री जी की पत्नी ब्राह्मण हैं। रामविलास पासवान की पत्नी भी ब्राह्मण थीं। लेकिन क्या उनके बच्चे ब्राह्मण पैदा हुए?

लड़की ले ली आपने, लेकिन लड़के को ब्राह्मण नहीं बना पाए। फिर सिर्फ ब्राह्मण समाज पर लगातार हमला क्यों?

हमारे समाज की सामाजिक स्थिति ऐसी बना दी गई है कि लोग खुलकर बोल भी नहीं पाते, क्योंकि एससी-एसटी एक्ट का डर सामने खड़ा कर दिया गया है।

हमारी समाज की बच्चियाँ डरती हैं घर से निकलने में। बहुत से परिवार उन्हें बाहर भेजना तक बंद कर देते हैं। लेकिन जरूरतें सबकी होती हैं। जैसे आपकी बेटियाँ पैसा कमाने के लिए घर से निकलती हैं, वैसे ही हमारी बेटियाँ भी निकलती हैं।

अगर किसी के पास भरपूर पैसा है तो बात अलग है, लेकिन हर परिवार इतना सक्षम नहीं होता। सवाल सिर्फ ब्राह्मण समाज की बेटियों का नहीं है, सवाल उनके सम्मान, सुरक्षा और बराबरी के अधिकार का है।

My mother was a working woman. She worked in a bank, so every morning she had to leave home at a fixed time. There were days when she simply did not have the time to cook a full meal for us. On those days, she would make this simple fish curry with whatever vegetables were available at home.

Potato was almost always there, but sometimes it was papaya, carrot, cauliflower, ridge gourd, pointed gourd, or any other vegetable she could find. We used to call it machher torkari. With hot rice, this simple dish was one of my favourites.

Many years passed. I was living alone in Delhi when, during the Covid days, this dish suddenly came back to my mind. I had tested positive, was weak and could not go out. Cooking was also difficult. But I had some fish and vegetables at home, so I made this curry and kept eating it for the next three or four days. Somehow, it felt comforting.

Yesterday, after a full day at college, I came home tired. I did not really have the energy to cook anything elaborate, but my daughter was asking me to make something. So I looked at what we had and made this fish curry.

And as soon as it was cooking, those old memories came back. My mother, her rushed mornings before going to the bank, and that simple plate of rice and machher torkari. It is funny how some dishes stay with us. Years can pass, you can live in another city, and life can change completely, but one familiar taste can take you straight back home.

उन्होंने व्यंग्य करते हुए कहा, “‘हज़ारों साल से रोटी नहीं मिली’ जैसे दावे करने वाले पहले इतिहास पढ़ें। जब ये लोग राजा थे तो पानी कहाँ से पीते थे? राजा थे लेकिन पानी नहीं पीते थे? ये कैसा मजाक है!”

अग्निहोत्री जी ने कहा कि ऐसे झूठे दावों और पूर्वाग्रहों से पहले इतिहास समझिए, पढ़िए-लिखिए और बुद्धि के दरवाजे खुले रखकर बात कीजिए।
