The Beatles released their legendary album “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” in the US, June 1, 1967
Did you know? One of the most fascinating aspects of the album is how a random mistake during the printing of the packaging created a decades-long mystery for fans, eventually feeding directly into the famous "Paul Is Dead" conspiracy theories.
When the album was released, it featured a brilliant, colorful gatefold jacket that opened up to show a magnificent full-page photo of John, Paul, George, and Ringo dressed in their vibrant, satin marching band uniforms. However, because of a minor alignment error during the heavy mass production of the cardboard jackets for the US market, the edge of the cardboard fold cut right through the side of Paul McCartney's left sleeve.
This printing glitch completely obscured a black patch he was wearing on his arm. To the naked eye, the distorted text on the cut-off patch looked like it read OPD, which frantic fans quickly interpreted as an official police acronym for "Officially Pronounced Dead." In reality, the patch was a genuine piece of police memorabilia from Canada. McCartney had been gifted it by a fan during their 1965 North American tour, and it actually read OPP for the Ontario Provincial Police. By the time anyone noticed the printing error, millions of copies were already spinning on turntables across America, cementing a simple factory mistake into rock and roll folklore.
