You climbed into my lap during our visits. Your smile was infectious and destroyed me. I knew you were going to die. I diagnosed you with cancer and we lived in Malawi. You inspire me to continue the fight. #ShareAStoryInOneTweet
Home after seeing James Talarico speak. Guys, he's the dream, no one gets those of us living in Texas and communicates like him. Do us all a service and vote for him in the primary on March 3rd. Do us one better and donate to his campaign. https://t.co/nSOcefRnoI
The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
Thank you @HCP4__Briones for the opportunity to serve our community more broadly. I look forward to working with our Board, Harris Health System leadership, and Commissioner Briones' office to ensure the strength of our Harris County health safety net.
I am honored to appoint Dr. Shubhada Hooli to the Harris Health Board. As a practicing pediatric emergency medicine physician at Texas Children’s Hospital, scientist, and respected public health advocate, she brings direct clinical insight, research-driven innovation, and a deep commitment to health equity. Her experience reducing health disparities and her global health perspective are essential to @harrishealth's mission to serving our most vulnerable residents with excellence. Dr. Hooli will be a tremendous asset to the Board; my team and I look forward to working with her in the coming years.
@sewellchan@Columbia@sewellchan Dan and I are so disappointed to hear this. Your leadership @TexasTribune was evident and I know more than a few folks who were brought into their readership by you. Wishing you the best in your next steps.
To talk about children with autism like this - like they are irreparably damaged and a burden to society - is ignorant, mean and callous.
This man simply has no idea what he’s talking about. He brings shame to America.
The university will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government. https://t.co/5k5t9RYYC2
Great News: My Democratic colleagues and I officially created the Congressional Doctors Caucus.
As Republicans try to slash Medicaid and push medical conspiracy theories that endanger our health, my fellow Democratic doctors and I will stand up for our patients, science, and public health.
Very thankful for this kind of journalism. The degree of devastation is unfathomable. All avoidable if middle/high income earners in the US are willing to part with a few dollars a week.
Elon Musk says that no one has died because he slashed humanitarian aid. I went to South Sudan to check if that's true. It's not. Within an hour of starting interviews, I had the names of a 10-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl who had died because of decisions by wealthy men in Washington.
The visit that moved me the most was to a remote area that used to have no health care, where women routinely died in childbirth. Then a US-funded maternity clinic opened through @UNFPA in December, and not one woman has died since. I showed up, and people mistakenly thought I was responsible for the clinic. One new mom wanted to name her baby for me, and the village elders thanked me and hailed America's generosity. What they didn't know was that Trump/Musk had cut all funding for UNFPA and that as a result the maternity clinic will close this month, and women will once again be bleeding to death in the dust.
Here's a giftlink to my report from ground level about what the shutdown of USAID means: https://t.co/tbgKk7ESqj
Scientists, researchers, and advocates recently gathered in Washington, D.C. for the Stand Up for Science rally. Voices from Johns Hopkins and across the globe spoke on the importance of continued investment in scientific progress. https://t.co/JyCEatDoC8
@Acyn Or increase administrative costs and push a whole bunch of people (mainly children) off of medicaid for no good reason. Oh yes and it will be the children's hospitals footing the bill.
I do know about this - shared by a teacher fresh off maternity leave. I treated her baby after they were exposed to measles. The baby, too young to be vaccinated, needed to quarantine. Her mother, a teacher, didn't know how the family would afford basic expenses.
Despite 3 of 4 Texas teachers being women, many school districts do not offer paid maternity leave. That didn't surprise me too much. Most Texans don't hve access.
But what I didn't know - & I'd venture to guess much of the public doesn't - is they can also DOCK teachers' pay 🧵
I think it says something that so many scientists noticed Pubmed was down on a random Saturday afternoon in March
Scientists noticed because:
(1) we rely on Pubmed to look up info and (2) because scientists are working around the clock to solve health problems. Keep us working.
I understand why people are upset with this woman, but she was struggling to make ends meet with inflation and high interest rates—while also trying to start a family with IVF, which is damn expensive. I don’t agree with her vote, but frankly, I understand it too.
She was brave enough to step forward and admit she was wrong. She’s being part of the solution. Are the people mocking her doing the same? I don’t think so.
There’s no path to a federal government that actually gives a damn about working people again without embracing those who are brave enough to say they made a mistake.
JD/Trump are thugs. And this ambush of Zelensky at the White House will do deep damage to Ukraine, to our allies and to the U.S.
Openly ridiculing and demeaning a man who has kept his country alive for three years against all the odds is a national embarrassment and runs counter to our own security interests. But they could care less that Ukraine was invaded by Russia — the second biggest military power on the planet — led by a ruthless dictator willing to sacrifice soldiers and civilians by the hundreds of thousands. Trump and JD trying to look tough in front of the cameras even though it’s Zelensky who is the strongest one in the room. The guy who was supposed to lose to Russia in a matter of hours or days is still there, fighting. As are the brave Ukrainian soldiers on the front line.
We help Ukraine because it’s the right thing to do for a fellow democracy that is suffering a brutal invasion AND because if Ukraine were to fall, the next fight would be on the front lines of our NATO allies and our military would be treaty-bound to join the war. In other words, Ukraine is shouldering the total cost in terms of the fighting, the lives forever damaged and the lives lost so that we and our European allies don’t have to.
Trump and Vance are not only abandoning Ukraine. They are abandoning the security of our country. Today they made it much more likely that our service members will be fighting again in Europe, 80 years after countless brave Americans helped liberate the continent and make it safe for democracy.
Shameful.
I'm hearing from experts around the world about what the destruction of USAID is meaning: "a global health massacre," in the words of a doctor who has devoted her life to humanitarian work on the front lines. Millions of malnourished children left to starve. Pregnant women not getting micronutrients to prevent neural tube defects. Programs against schistosomiasis abandoned. HIV positive patients left without ARV's. Water no longer purified. Surveillance against Ebola and bird flu set back. TB patients unable to get medicine. I've long argued that USAID should be reformed, but this Trump/Musk demolition is cruel and incompetent and benefits China, while killing children just as wonderful as our own.
If every middle- and high-income adult in the U.S. chipped in just $240 a year, we could fully fund #USAID’s entire budget. That's how little it costs our country. For about the cost of your weekly coffee, you could solve some of our world's greatest health problems.
The heartbreak
Trump wants us to believe that USAID is bankrupting America—when in reality, it’s less than 1% of the federal budget.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk—the richest man on Earth—is gutting the world’s largest provider of food aid. This is a man who could end world hunger single-handedly and still be the richest man alive. But he won’t.
We are watching evil at work.
