2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time.
This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.
In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence. Navi Pillay has also contributed to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time.

🇮🇳 Defence minister approved a revised SOP for using MoD proof ranges, field firing ranges, and laboratory testing facilities.
- Testing charges waived for iDEX, TDF, Make, and other MoD-sponsored developmental projects to promote defense indigenisation.
- A dedicated three-day slot every quarter reserved for proof firing of government-sponsored projects and industry-led developmental projects.
- The SOP lists facilities available through DRDO, Government Quality Assurance agencies, and the three Services.
- Simplified procedures for facility allocation, testing charges, and documentation aim to improve transparency and #ease of doing business.
- Arbitration replaced with an industry-friendly conciliation clause to resolve disputes more efficiently.
India is not an impossible market for Starlink but the offering has to solve for more than telecom.
- Go beyond data localization and India’s existing security framework. India already requires local gateways, monitoring, and geographic service restrictions. Give Delhi a locally executable veto over India-authorised terminals.
- Don’t compete with Indian telecom partners in D2C instead incentivize them. Give partners economics on consumer activations and don’t go after their existing D2C. Starlink can focus on direct sales on enterprise, mobility, and remote demand. The near-term opportunity is where terrestrial networks are too expensive or difficult to build not cheap mass-market broadband.
- Help solve India’s LEO problem. A future Indian NGSO enters an environment where major foreign systems already have earlier filings and Starlink is operating at scale. That creates coordination constraints something Indian operators have raised with TRAI. SpaceX has an established relationship with India’s space ecosystem, having flown 2 dedicated and 19 rideshare missions for Indian companies. Build on that and offer a serious bilateral coordination framework so a future Indian LEO can coexist with Starlink.
• Stress test PoC. DoT has given Starlink sample spectrum to demonstrate technical and security compliance. Let Indian agencies test their concerns incl whether a terminal disabled in India can be re-authorised from abroad. Use that as the basis for commercial clearance.
Create a win-win deal where India gets control.
Indian telcos make money as Starlink grows.
India gets a path to its own LEO with Starlink as an enabler.
And Starlink gets into the market. Starlink has a lot to offer tbh.
🇺🇸Department of War is accelerating directed-energy counter-UAS capabilities
