गुरु-शिष्य परंपरा की एक अद्भुत मिसाल आचार्य ज्ञान सागर जी और आचार्य विद्यासागर जी। मात्र 21 वर्ष की आयु में आचार्य ज्ञान सागर जी ने आचार्य विद्यासागर जी को अपना उत्तराधिकारी घोषित किया और उन्हें अपनी समाधि सम्पन्न कराने का दायित्व सौंपा। नव-निर्वाचित आचार्य विद्यासागर जी ने अपने गुरु की तन-मन से सेवा की और अंतिम क्षणों तक उनके साथ रहकर अपनी गुरु-भक्ति का अनुपम उदाहरण प्रस्तुत किया।

इसी को वास्तविक समाधि मरण कहा जाता है जहाँ पूर्ण जागरूकता, संयम और वैराग्य के साथ शरीर का त्याग किया जाता है। जैन मुनि सामान्यतः अस्पतालों पर निर्भर नहीं रहते; यदि कोई रोग होता भी है तो वे प्राकृतिक या आयुर्वेदिक उपचार अपनाते हैं। यदि उससे स्वास्थ्य लाभ न हो, तो वे शांति और साधना के मार्ग पर चलते हुए समाधि मरण को स्वीकार करते हैं, जो आत्मसंयम और आध्यात्मिक साधना की सर्वोच्च अवस्था मानी जाती है।

हालाँकि, यदि स्थिति अत्यंत गंभीर हो और जीवन-रक्षा के लिए आवश्यक हो, तो कुछ मुनि दीक्षा का त्याग कर उपचार भी करवा लेते हैं यह भी विवेक और परिस्थिति के अनुसार लिया गया निर्णय होता है।
