Something I always liked about the dynamic between Luke and Han is how Luke both quickly idolizes Han and still isn't intimidated at all. Talk about brotherhood vibes.

Empire is the movie where the bond between Luke and R2 really shines through. So many Dagobah scenes where in my mind, when I think of them, I hear R2 and how he reacts to what's happening with Luke.

@realmallard1 It was the opposite for me. When I first read it, I liked it. Not much anymore now. I can also only see it as an AU even within the EU. Generally, there aren't many EU writers with whom I was fully happy as far as Luke is concerned. Still, they all did preserve his core, I think.

@bespinfatigues Understood. ☺️ And really, it's such masterful storytelling of the complexity of human emotions, it can be all of that at once. Avenging and rescuing. Failing from one perspective, succeeding from another one. It's multi-layered brilliancy.

@bespinfatigues 2/2: And I agree mostly about Luke's overall arc, but I think there is a crucial sub-arc, too. He wasn't ready for Vader in terms of being able to best him in fight & kill him (as Obi & Yoda wanted him to). He *was* ready to face him as a temptation and still remain in the Light.

@bespinfatigues Well, I said "mainly". 😉 I think Luke's motivation is many-faceted in ESB, and avenging his father is of course part of it. But his key motivation was to save others, which I think is why his instinctive reaction to Vader's offer is to refuse. Instantly and very drastically. 1/2

Legends Luke is not infallible or invincible. He suffers through setbacks and losses, grows wiser and mightier, but never becomes an all-powerful "god" or "fighting machine". Anyone claiming that is lying. Read for yourself. I'll gladly give tips if you don't know where to start.

Luke Skywalker at the end of "The Empire Strikes Back". I've always been fascinated by how deep these final moments were, for Luke, for Leia, and for both of them together. Hardly any words spoken, but so much is coming across. Just by eyes, facial expression and interactions.

One of the most important messages in VI to me is that Luke is a Jedi because of his decisions and his heart, not his Force skills. He's certainly more powerful than in V, but by comparison his Force skills are still rather basic. The key is his wit, resourcefulness and courage.

Not that this makes it less horrible objectively; but subjectively, I believe Luke had prepared himself for this eventuality emotionally before he surrendered.
