Many people in rural communities live with poor vision simply because they believe it is a natural part of ageing. Instead of seeking help, they adapt to the loss, often unaware that treatment is possible. That’s why door-to-door eye screenings matter. By taking eye care directly to people’s homes, community mobilisers can identify vision problems early and connect individuals to the care they need.
Haseena from Alwar, Rajasthan, had been struggling with worsening vision for over a year, accepting it as part of growing older. During a routine home screening, a community mobiliser identified her cataract and helped her access surgery. Today, she has regained her sight, confidence and independence.
This Cataract Awareness Month, Haseena’s story is a reminder that timely screening can change lives. Through Sightsavers India’s Rural Eye Health Programme and our partners, essential eye care is reaching people before avoidable blindness becomes a way of life.
