@KellyCNBC@fm_apprentice If you can wait until 2028-9, there’s Toyota (and others) betting on all solid-state batteries (ASSB) to leapfrog existing LFP & NMC batteries. ASSBs could resemble refilling and range just like existing gas vehicles, and being lightweight as well.

@Brad_Setser Not to mention it’s barebones social infrastructure policies which are designed to offload significant costs to the individual, very much like China.
@Brad_Setser@robhawcroft Brad, the Chinese government copied the Singapore playbook and converted a significant portion of their forex reserves from currency intervention, into long term assets held under the China Investment Corporation (CIC).
@paulg Surplus value being pocketed by those closest to the money, living costs rise whilst wages stagnate despite rising productivity. Rising productivity accrue to those who control the means of production.
@ruima Literally because the Commanding Heights of administration refuse to allow high rise residential buildings, Beijing is pure polycentric urban sprawl reliant on the 3rd Ring Road. Guomao and Haidian are the main economic hotspots and they are opposite ends of the city…
@michaelxpettis The Chinese government literally copy pasted the approach by the Singapore government to keep exports “competitive” by devaluing the local country when FX rushes into the country. Examples of Singapore include GIC and Temasek Holdings.
China is essentially a large copycat of SG.
@michaelxpettis Hi Michael, I think you need to also take note of the China Investment Corporation, which is literally invests all the US dollars that it bought from all the FX interventions, and keeps them intentionally outside of China, to prevent the CNY from appreciating in value.

@Brad_Setser The reason Xi is fixated on an industrial policy that focuses on batteries, is that all Western advanced economies do not have the engineering depth and breadth to pursue advanced battery technologies. Even Korea and Japan are lagging behind on battery technologies.
@Brad_Setser Wait until you travel to Shanghai, whereby the locals there are buying less locally or foreign assembled BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, in favour of NIO cars which can have a fully battery being swapped in 3 minutes, thanks to their widespread NIO Power battery swapping network.
