*Do Not Do This to Someone You Backbit*

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“Is it sufficient when repenting from ghībah (backbiting) to ask Allāh to forgive the person who was backbitten, or is it a must to inform them and make amends?

“What is correct is that it is not necessary to inform him; it simply suffices one to ask Allāh to forgive them and to mention them by way of the good traits they possess in the places in which he backbit them. This is the favoured position of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah and others.

“Those who said it is a must to inform them likened ghībah to wealth-related rights, while the difference between them is clear; in wealth-related rights, the oppressed person benefits from having the equivalent to the whatever he was oppressed regarding returned to him, and if he wishes he can take it or give it away as charity.

“As for in ghībah, then this is not possible, and nothing is achieved by informing him except the opposite of the wishes of the Legislator, as it will incite hatred within them and harm them if they hear whatever they were insulted with, and perhaps it will cause them to have enmity towards the other and they will never become on good terms with him.

“It is not possible for the Wise Legislator to permit or allow something the result of which is this, let alone obligate and mandate it; the Sharīʿah revolves around abolishing and minimising harms, not causing and effectuating them, and Allāh, Most High, knows best.”

Shaykh I watched your video on Zakah. If I’m eligible for giving Zakah, and the price of gold is little lower than the price of silver, do I give zakah money based on the that which is more beneficial to the Muslims? Like in this case Silver?
