International Day Against Drug Abuse: Why Assam's fight is about stopping a transit corridor from becoming a consumption market
Today, as the world observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the focus is not only on combating the illegal drug trade but also on protecting future generations from addiction. Observed every year on June 26 since 1989, this United Nations observance serves as a reminder that the fight against narcotics is as much about safeguarding societies as it is about enforcing the law.
For Northeast India, the message carries even greater significance. The region's strategic location has long made it a transit corridor for narcotics moving across international borders. The greatest risk is that a transit corridor can eventually become a consumption market, where drugs no longer just pass through but begin destroying local communities and young lives.
This is why the fight against drugs is not merely a law and order issue. It is about protecting Assam's youth, its workforce and its long term economic future.
Under the leadership of Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr. @himantabiswa dangoriya, Assam has adopted a zero tolerance approach against narcotics. The last few days alone demonstrate the intensity of this crackdown.
On June 26 today, Sribhumi Police intercepted a drug consignment worth ₹10.8 crore, with one person apprehended and the hunt continuing for others. Yesterday, on June 25, the same police unit seized 11,695 bottles of an intoxicating substance worth ₹2.34 crore, arresting three individuals. Earlier, on June 23, Cachar Police recovered 29,200 suspected Yaba tablets valued at around ₹2.9 crore in Silchar, dealing another major blow to organised drug networks.
Through the #AssamAgainstDrugs campaign, the Hon'ble Chief Minister has consistently highlighted these operations while reaffirming the government's commitment to protecting the future of Assam's youth from what he has described as "social destruction."
The message is clear.
As Northeast India emerges as a hub for trade, investment and connectivity, it cannot afford to become a market for narcotics. Every successful seizure is more than a police operation, it is an investment in the state's future.
Because Assam's greatest strength is not merely its location.
It is its people.
Protecting them today is essential to building a stronger, safer and more prosperous Northeast tomorrow.

A fact the Congress cannot erase!
More Indians were jailed during the Emergency than during the 1942 Quit India Movement. The British imprisoned freedom fighters, the Congress imprisoned fellow Indians for defending democracy.
Hon'ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa dangoriya today rightly honoured our Loktantra Senanis on the occasion of #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas. Their courage ensured that democracy prevailed over dictatorship.

Assam’s Lakhpati Didi Mission Empowers Women with Hospitality Skills and Entrepreneurial Dreams..
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that a quiet revolution is unfolding across the state through the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which is not only providing financial support but also nurturing talent, skills and entrepreneurship among women.
As part of this transformation, 200 aspiring Lakhpati Didis have successfully completed professional training in the hospitality sector, equipping them with industry ready skills to build sustainable livelihoods and launch their own enterprises.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative goes beyond capital assistance by focusing on confidence building, capacity development and enterprise readiness. Programmes such as ASOMI Rongali Canteens are helping women gain practical experience in hospitality, business management and customer service, enabling them to become successful entrepreneurs.
The training forms part of Assam's broader women empowerment strategy, which seeks to create a new generation of financially independent women capable of leading businesses, generating employment and contributing to the state's economy.
By combining skill development with entrepreneurship, the Lakhpati Didi initiative is opening new opportunities for women across both rural and urban Assam. The programme is designed to ensure that beneficiaries receive not only financial assistance but also the knowledge and professional expertise needed to sustain and grow their ventures.
The initiative reflects the state's vision of transforming aspirations into lasting economic success while strengthening women's participation in sectors with growing employment potential, including hospitality and tourism.
As Assam continues to expand its tourism and service economy, professionally trained women entrepreneurs are expected to play an increasingly important role in driving inclusive growth and local enterprise.
With every trained Lakhpati Didi, Assam is creating more than entrepreneurs, it is building confident women leaders who are shaping a stronger, more self reliant and prosperous future for the state.
