BOTH BROTHERS ARE DEAD. You already know the first half. Frans Steenkamp, 32, was shot dead in his parents’ house in Modelpark, eMalahleni, while Francois and Sarita were at Loskop Dam for a fishing competition. That was the phone call. “Dad, Fransie is dead.” Now Dirk Steenkamp, 37, is dead too. He lasted days in Life Cosmos ICU after they pumped him full of holes. Two bullets in the stomach. Two through the legs. He crawled to the garage on shot-up legs after watching his little brother get shot in the face. Thursday night the hospital lost him. Saturday his father had to confirm it to the press because this country still needs a father to say out loud that both his sons are corpses. They did not die for a payroll. They died because armed men walked into a family’s house for a television, laptops, jewellery, cash, and two firearms from the safe. Frans hit the panic button. The cowards kicked a hole in a thin bedroom door, shoved pistol arms through it, and opened fire. The brothers fought with kitchen knives. Dirk stabbed an arm through the gap. Frans ripped the door open, chased them, stabbed one in the back, and got his face blown off for it. Dirk saw it happen. Then he crawled. Dirk was Executive Head of Curro Bankenveld. Former head of high school at Curro Westbrook. The kind of man kids remembered as loud, positive, and impossible to forget. From his hospital bed he still sent the line that should shame this government into the ground, “I still love this country, and Witbank.” He left a wife and two children. Frans left a hole in a living room that used to have rugby and a braai the same night they were murdered. The family still cannot even set a funeral because Dirk’s body is still with forensics. Police say there are “leads.” There are always leads. There are almost never names. Two brothers. One house. One television. Two graves. RIP Frans. RIP Dirk. He fought back with a panga and put one of the attackers in hospital too. That’s the only reason this family is still breathing.
