Dozens of Trump supporters rushed to the East Front entrance to the Senate side of the Capitol and some repeatedly hit the locked doors with batons and poles.
“Arrest Congress!” a woman in a flag scarf shouted.

Storming the Capitol? My students come to American History class full of ideals about the most beautiful democracy in the world, just as I did however many years back. I’ve since lost any illusion about American ‘democracy’, but how will I be able to help them make sense of this?
30 million lost their jobs in six weeks.
We are the only major country with millions unemployed and uninsured.
It's time to reexamine our society's foundations and fight for a more just nation.
This is the moment to make sure everyone has economic security and health care.
$282,000,000,000.
That's by how much America’s billionaires increased their wealth in less than a month, while over 22 million lost their jobs.
This system of unfettered greed is morally obscene. It’s time to put working families first—not billionaires. https://t.co/KAsOVJgbKX
Here's an idea for @JeffBezos: Instead of handing out t-shirts, maybe, as the richest man on Earth, you can provide all of your workers with paid sick leave, hazard pay, protective gear, and a safe and sanitary workplace.
American taxpayers put tens of millions of dollars into developing remdesivir. Any coronavirus treatment or vaccine must be made free for everybody.
We will not tolerate profiteering by Gilead or any other pharmaceutical corporation right now. Human life comes first.
Justice for frontline workers means childcare, safe conditions and $500 a week in hazard pay to:
🛒Grocery workers
👷🏼♀️Transit workers and truck drivers
📦Warehouse, delivery and postal workers
👩🏽⚕️Paramedics, nurses, pharmacy employees
🧺Domestic workers
👨🏼🌾Farm laborers
🧼Janitors
Even before this pandemic, a majority of our workers lived paycheck to paycheck.
1 in 7 children didn’t get enough to eat.
40% couldn’t afford a $400 emergency.
Let us learn from this crisis. Let us finally eradicate hunger and poverty in the richest country in human history.
$33.4 billion. That's how much the wealth of Jeff Bezos and six other billionaires increased last week while millions of Americans were filing for unemployment.
Our society cannot sustain itself when so few have so much, while so many have so little. https://t.co/XwlhIXTMzS
We are looking today at doctors and nurses who can't acquire the masks they need as they put their lives on the line.
Yet we are the wealthiest country in the history of the world.
How does that happen?
If today we had the same level of inequality we had forty years ago, the bottom 90% of American households would be earning $12,000 more every year.
$120,000 per decade.
Do not tell me we cannot afford to cover the paychecks of every worker during this horrific pandemic.
Our free "Conducting Remote Interviews" #oralhistory webinar is today from 1-3pm CST! Two hours of instruction followed by a lengthy Q&A session. If you can't make it, both sections will be recorded and posted publicly later this week. Hope to see you there!
To clarify, $1200 checks are ONLY going to some w/social sec numbers, NOT immigrants w/ tax IDs (ITINs).
Thanks to GOP, these checks will be cut off the backs of *taxpaying immigrants,* who get nothing. Many are essential workers who pay more taxes than Amazon.

Students in too many countries cannot separate “fact” from “opinion”. This is where the responsibilities of teachers in the humanities lay, at all levels of education. This is how we can make a difference.
