A woman walks in feeling fine, has a routine cholesterol test, and leaves eleven years later on nine drugs, none of which treat anything she came in with.

Nothing went wrong. That is the machine running exactly as it was built to run.

Day one: she is well. The nurse takes bloods because she has turned fifty and the computer said so.

Week two: cholesterol 6.1. Statin. She arrived a woman and leaves a patient, which is a promotion in this building.

Month nine: her legs ache on the stairs. Told statins rarely do that, and to persist.

Year one: blood sugar has drifted up, which statins are known to do. She is now prediabetic. Metformin.

Year two: metformin has introduced her to her own bathroom. She adjusts her life around it rather than mention it.

Year three: reflux. A proton pump inhibitor goes on, indefinitely, with no conversation about ever coming off.

Year four: stomach acid flattened, so B12 and iron stop absorbing properly. She is exhausted. Her bloods are described as satisfactory.

Year five: tired, aching, foggy, flat. Offered an antidepressant, and takes it, because by now she has accepted that she is simply someone who gets ill.

Year six: osteopenia on the scan. Nobody mentions she was advised at forty to keep the weights light.

Year eight: blood pressure up. Two more tablets, one to fix the ankles the first one swelled.

Year eleven: nine medications and a repeat prescription that renews itself without a human being reading it.

Her cholesterol is magnificent. She has never felt worse.

Not one of those prescriptions was an error. Every single one correctly treated the drug in front of it.

A well person buys nothing. A dead person buys nothing.

The whole business sits in the corridor between the two, and forty years of expertise has gone into keeping people walking slowly down the middle of it.

🚨 HMRC took £90.4 BILLION more from taxpayers last year.

That comes directly from the National Audit Office.

In just one year, HMRC collected 10.3% more tax - an extra £90.4 billion!

Thanks in part to frozen tax thresholds, 1.1 million more people were dragged into paying Income Tax.

So HMRC clearly has no problem taking more money from you.

What it does have, is a problem passing audit.

For the 24th year in a row, auditors were unable to give HMRC a completely clean audit because they found significant levels of fraud and error.

And now Andy Burnham is reportedly considering another £38 billion of tax rises.

How about before taking another penny from taxpayers…

Nobody said a word for twenty years.

Cereal for breakfast, from a box with a cartoon tiger on it. Perfectly normal. Part of a balanced breakfast, it said so on the side.

Sandwich, crisps, fizzy drink, five days a week at a desk. Nobody rang anybody.

Chocolate bar at eleven. Another at three. Colleagues watched this happen daily and said nothing, because they were doing it too.

Takeaway on the Friday. Second takeaway on the Saturday. My mother, who now worries about my kidneys, once brought the second one to the door herself.

Pints on a Thursday, kebab at midnight, chips out of paper on the walk home in the rain. Not one intervention. Not a leaflet. Not a raised eyebrow from a single medical professional in the country.

Biscuits at every meeting I have ever attended, provided by the employer, as a kindness.

Twenty years of that and the general public looked on with total serenity.

Then I ate a ribeye with butter on it and declined the side salad.

Now there's concern. Now it's "but is that sustainable." Now somebody's aunt is a nurse and would like a word. Now I'm getting "everything in moderation" from a man who has had a Twix for lunch since 2009.

Two decades of the actual damage and the room stayed silent throughout.

Turn down a bread roll and suddenly every single one of them is a cardiologist.

More than 1,500 convicted foreign criminals are living in taxpayer-funded asylum accommodation because they have not been deported.

Labour is battling a growing removals backlog, with almost 20,000 foreign crooks living across Britain.

And an 11-month probe by this newspaper can reveal around 1,509 offenders have been given free homes found for them.

Critics said our findings “reveal that the Home Office is paying for illegal migrant criminals to be scattered in communities”.

The Home Office insisted that the decision to release a foreign criminal into the community is “never taken lightly”, before adding “suitable accommodation is sourced prior to their release to manage them effectively”.

This collaborates evidence given to MPs by asylum accommodation provider Serco, who revealed a “lack of returns agreements with certain countries means their nationals will never be deported”.

They added: “These individuals are therefore transferred to asylum accommodation on an indefinite basis.”
