Today, in Iran, this woman was hanged.

Samira Sabzian was a child bride, compelled into marriage with an older man who inflicted relentless abuse upon her.

Her alleged crime—killing the man who forced her into marriage of torture—and her heinous execution epitomize a government that treats women worse than animals, persistently refusing to establish legal protections for them.

Without legal safeguards for women and girls in Iran, more will endure domestic and state violence while perpetrators go unpunished.

Today was my last day of fall classes at Columbia University.

It’s full-circle for me. I’ve lived through two Taliban regimes now. The first drove my mother out of Afghanistan so my brother and I could pursue a better life. She excelled in English in high school. She wanted to be a doctor. She could never achieve her dreams, so she sacrificed her own.. for ours.

Now in the second Talib regime, 30 years later, pundits and experts are pushing for madrassas (Talib Deobandi religious schools) as an alternative for girls. I would direct them to my email and social media messages. “Sara Jan, my dream is to become an astronaut/doctor/lawyer/engineer/artist/author/biologist/writer/politician/computer scientist..”

What a good education has provided me, is the agency to work with many others, to make sure you don’t sacrifice your education like my mother had to. Whether it’s online, in-person, whatever structure it may be. Afghan girls must have the same chance to study here, or anywhere in the world they wish to.

The generations of sacrifice ends here. No matter what it takes, we’ll see you where you deserve to be, as the Afghan astronaut/doctor/lawyer/engineer/artist/author/biologist/writer/politician/computer scientists of tomorrow.

On day 7 of Hanukkah, Parya Faramarzi, a 16-year-old teenager from Pasargad in southern Fars province is also in Adelabad prison in Shiraz two months after arrest on October 11 during a raid by security agents on her home.She has suffered “eye stroke” twice due to interrogations.

On day 5 of Hanukkah, Ali Bourbour, there has been no information about him, a molecular biology student at the Science and Culture University in Tehran, since his arbitrary arrest on December 7. According to the Center for Human Rights in Iran.
