I told a hardware store employee that my fence was leaning.

He asked which way.

I said toward my neighbor.

He put down what he was holding.

"You talk to him yet?"

I said no. In my country you would repair it quietly and never mention it.

He shook his head slowly, like I had described a tragedy.

I said I did not want to trouble him.

I knocked on my neighbor's door. His name is Dale. I had lived beside him for a year and I had never said more than good morning.

I told him about the fence.

We fixed it that Saturday. He brought the post. I brought lunch. It took six hours because we stopped talking about the fence after twenty minutes.

He told me about his father, who built the original fence in 1988.

The fence is now partly Japanese.

He has not mentioned this. Neither have I.

But he waves differently now. Not the hand. The whole arm.
