@LisaHalverstadt The world would be a better place if the police were to focus on crimes of passion and greed. Criminalizing actions done out of necessity, such as going to “the bathroom” where no bathroom exists or sleeping where no bed exists, is inhumane and counterproductive. #stopthesweeps
@lacontroller These connections are critical. We are presenting at the @naehomelessness conference in March how our Show The Way app is being used to match people on the streets with available cold weather shelter beds in Kansas City. This same tech could be leveraged in LA.
https://t.co/NsXwUaz8hY LA County does not use Counting Us but hopefully, after three straight years of technical issues, @LAHomeless will consider joining the 68 CoCs that used it for the 2024 PIT count. @LACountyBOS
Each year @SanDiegoCounty employees volunteer on the @RTFHSD Point in Time Count, helping us identify our city's unsheltered residents. This work is instrumental in helping us get more folks off the streets and into housing. Read more: https://t.co/F5IvgRAZpA
Come join our webinar on Tuesday 12/12 to learn what we have in store to support regions as they plan for an accurate 2024 HUD Point-in-Time #homeless count. https://t.co/M97sdp8IRX @HUDgov
@sdut Bed availability is a moot point when it comes to Martin vs Boise as the City is citing people for encroachment instead. This law was created to prevent housed citizens from leaving their trash cans out for too long.
@sdut Ideally, bed availability should be tracked in the region's Homelessness Management Information System (HMIS). Unfortunately, most HMIS lack the ability to check if the bed is actually available, appropriate, close by, and if the client is eligible for it.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
If you’d like to serve as support for someone recently exiting homelessness, and into their new home please join us for this informational meeting next week.
@hardlynormal Agreed that we also need to evaluate why people aren’t seeking shelter but that’s not part of the ruling. Just seeking clarity on the math behind the ruling as it has a better chance of standing up if it is not asking for cities like LA to come up with 60K beds (that may suck).
The rhetoric of Gavin Newsom and London Breed is dangerous and promoting the stripping away of the civil rights of Americans without a home. There are real solutions to homelessness, like Housing and Intensive Support.
@elonmusk@micsolana Potential options to increase supply => 5 over 1 housing developments to replace strip malls, ADUs, conversions of empty office buildings, roommate matching, taxing STRs and investing the proceeds towards housing, and mass transit to increase the amount of accessible land.
@elonmusk@micsolana A key problem with adding funding for housing supports in a confined area is that this tends to inflate the cost of the limited housing stock. Areas like SF cannot easily add to the supply without building upwards, and much of SF has a 40 foot height limit.
So many open questions. How will available shelter beds be tracked? Could an open bed mean any bed even if it has eligibility restrictions? Or if it is far away? Will the city provide a map showing what public lands are OK for people to sleep on? #housingnothandcuffs
