At the 63rd Session of the #UNHRC in Geneva, Rauf Laghari addressed the council on the ongoing human rights and ecological crisis in Sindh caused by upstream Indus River diversions.
Highlighting the recent commencement of the Jalalpur Canal project without downstream consent, he warned of devastating water shortages, soil salinization, mangrove destruction, and forced displacement affecting over 60 million people. He called on the UN to urge Pakistan to halt upstream diversions and conduct an independent impact assessment.
"Protecting the Indus is not merely an environmental necessity; it is a fundamental human rights obligation."

On September 16, the World Sindhi Congress calls upon all Sindhis and friends of Sindh to join us in honoring the life of Shaheed Dr. Shahnawaz Kumbhar — a son of Sindh, a defender of secular values, and a fearless advocate for his people’s dignity.
Dr. Kumbhar dedicated his life to fighting injustice, extremism, and exploitation, believing that Sindh’s future must be rooted in diversity, human rights, and freedom. His voice challenged oppression, and his courage lit a path of hope for millions.
Though silenced, his sacrifice has become a beacon of resilience, reminding us that Sindh’s struggle for justice is far from over. Each year, we gather not just to mourn his loss, but to renew our commitment to the values he stood for: Equality, Human Dignity, A Secular and Peaceful Sindh.
Together, we will honor his memory and ensure that his dream of a just and free Sindh lives on.

Two underage Hindu sisters, Sita and Ropi Kolhi, were allegedly abducted in Tando Allahyar district, about 35km from Hyderabad city. The family alleges the girls were subjected to forced religious conversion and marriage that was claimed by the accused. According to the family, six men from the Machhi community carried out the abduction. Police said they recovered both sisters and presented them before a Civil Judge and Magistrate. The court ordered they be moved to a safe house. They are scheduled to appear again before the Tando Allahyar court on September 19.

Energy Riches, Yet Deep Poverty: The Reality of Sindh
A recent analysis by petroleum engineer Shahbaz Khan in The Express Tribune highlights the stark paradox between Sindh’s vast natural resources and the socioeconomic deprivation of its people:
Resource Powerhouse: Sindh produces roughly 38% of Pakistan’s oil and 66% of its natural gas, hosting over 120 oil and gas fields and generating around Rs60 billion in royalties during FY24–25 alone.
Massive Deprivation: Despite supplying national energy, only 10% to 15% of homes in interior Sindh have piped gas. According to cited reports, 40% of the population faces multidimensional poverty, and 44% of children aged 5–16 are out of school.
Deprived Producing Districts: Key energy-producing areas remain at the bottom of the Human Development Index (HDI). Districts like Badin (first oil discovery in 1981) and Sujawal fall under "low human development," while gas-rich Ghotki has an adult literacy rate of approximately 42%.
Concentration of Wealth: More than 80% of Sindh’s GDP remains concentrated in Karachi. Meanwhile, in rural areas, an estimated 76% of families are landless tenants under strong feudal control, which continues to resist progressive land taxation.
The Road Forward: The author argues that Sindh’s development strategy must be reset by directly investing oil and gas royalties into the producing districts. Key priorities include technical and vocational training, localized agro- and energy-supportive industrial cooperatives, and overdue land reforms to ensure resources translate into shared prosperity.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
World Sindhi Congress Strongly Condemns the Arrest of Bakhshal Thalho in Larkano
London— The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) strongly condemns the arrest of General Secretary of Awani Workers Party and activist Bakhshal Thalho, who was detained by state authorities while leading a peaceful demonstration in Larkano for the integrity and constitutional rights of Sindh.
The right to assemble peacefully and voice dissent against injustices is a fundamental democratic principle protected by international human rights conventions. The detention of peaceful political workers and leadership is an escalation aimed at suppressing legitimate political expression and collective rights in Sindh.
WSC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Bakhshal Thalho, the withdrawal of all charges against him, and an immediate end to the intimidation of peaceful political organizers. WSC further calls upon international human rights bodies to hold the authorities accountable for continuous violations of civil liberties in Sindh.

The PPP Acts as the Establishment’s Facade Against Sindh’s Fundamental Rights!
In the historic struggle for Sindh’s national emancipation, the preservation of its ancestral resources, and the inherent right to democratic self-governance, the Pakistan Peoples Party has become the foremost obstacle.
Whenever the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) lays out the comprehensive case of Sindh before foreign diplomats, international human rights monitors, and multilateral organizations—documenting systemic economic disenfranchisement, the unconstitutional diversion of the Indus River waters, and escalating political subjugation—the initial, reflexive response remains consistent:
"However, if the President of Pakistan is himself a Sindhi, how can Sindh legitimately claim to be marginalized and disenfranchised?"
Countering this calculated misperception and detailing the ground realities consumes immense diplomatic capital. It is vital for the global community to understand the real political architecture:
Tokenism and Cynical Identity Politics: PPP’s political leadership deploys the "Sindh Card" purely as an emotional bargaining chip to secure electoral power. Once elevated to the federal corridors of Islamabad, they systematically barter away the rights and sovereignty of the very people they claim to represent.
Resource Surrender for Political Survival: Sindh’s rightful water shares, agricultural territory, coastline, and mineral wealth are routinely conceded to the ruling elite of Rawalpindi and Lahore as political collateral, traded away solely to insulate the PPP's ruling clique from accountability and retain their administrative posts.
Cosmetic Representation vs. Structural Authority: State sovereignty does not rest with ornamental Sindhi figureheads installed in constitutional offices; actual, unyielding authority remains concentrated in Punjab's civil-military establishment. Regardless of which political banner heads the administration, state policy is perpetually engineered to preserve Punjab's institutional hegemony at the expense of historical federating units.
The Pakistan Peoples Party is not merely culpable for the domestic plunder, administrative paralysis, and socio-economic degradation of Sindh; on the international stage, it actively serves as a political shield and apologist for the establishment, deliberately neutralizing and diluting the legitimacy of Sindh’s narrative of oppression.
