Lots of thoughts in my head about Ken Russell's THE DEVILS recently, but some of the strongest in my head are on mass hysteria and the obscene flavor of joy it brings to those that indulge. A thread🧵

@CarterCruise Very well put! Your point about Jeanne not being allowed to retain dignity rings especially hollow with the context of The Devils of Loudun, which details how Sister Jeanne was carted around different villages as an example of exorcisms. Really harrowing stuff
i feel like most of you haven’t seen this film & therefore won’t care about my thoughts but whatever imma give them anyway!
an interesting part for me was how much i hated sister jeanne through the whole film bc i hate when oppressed people allow themselves to become a tool of their oppressor, but after thinking about it afterwards i realized she was done a bit of a disservice in the film that made empathizing with her harder.
father grandier is a flawed, sinful man, but we’re given plenty of insight into his reasoning & justifications so he’s allowed a lot more complexity than she is. & he’s also given some chance at redemption by being allowed to take accountability for his sins & die with some form of dignity & meaning. sister jeanne does feel guilt for her sins, but she is not allowed to take accountability or allowed to retain any dignity. she is simply silenced & reminded of her complete lack of power. even embracing death as her atonement would ultimately be meaningless.
& while both grandier & sister jeanne had supposedly committed their lives to god, because he is a man he is still allowed to pursue freedom, power, & sexual pleasure, things she was completely denied & even taught to be deeply ashamed of for desiring. he feels empowered to philosophize on why his sexual desires are justified, whereas she feels she must invent an outside power to justify hers, having no real power herself. so i get why he became the object of her understandable frustration & why she initially convinces herself of a possession.
& while he obviously wasn’t the most evil man within the power system, from her perspective, what’s the real difference? he might not be evil, but he isn’t exactly good, & he still benefits from & upholds the same power structure that empowers the truly evil men & oppresses her. he was a willing participant in that system until it turned on him.
just a couple thoughts off the top of my head but always interested to hear other perspectives & thoughts if anyone else decided to put themselves through watching this during its limited amc run lol.

Judgment day can wait.
Ken Russell’s THE DEVILS presented in a stunning, jaw-dropping 4K restoration has been extended for another week.
If you missed it, this is your sign. If you’ve already seen it, it’s time to descend into madness again.

@RawbertBeef (Haven't seen Clayface yet so no spoilers on exactly what he does pls) An unfortunate amt of people on this site defended Bear from Obsession, so that doesn't surprise me
I've always wondered about the white subway tile that's used so extensively in Jarman's set design; I interviewed Mark Kermode about the 'Devils' re-release, and this is what he told me:
@CrustyViolator If it means anything, being able to buy clothes with less of a hassle was one of the driving factors behind my losing weight. You got this!
