On my council estate, @dominos isn’t just takeaway — it’s one of the most accessible “treats”.
But when the least healthy options are the best value, that has its consequences.
At the Domino’s AGM tomorrow, I’ll be asking why?
#FoodIsCare 🍕🥤
@Botticelliwoman I deeply hear you! That is something I am tackling both in policy and academic spaces, whose knowledge is valued. It is painful to know that we are often only extracted from when it fits their agenda. Then I’m back in my estate where nothings changed.
‘It feels like an attack on the poor’
Dominic Watters is a single dad on Universal Credit. If the government decides not to increase benefits in line with inflation, he’d receive £600 less a year (acc to @resfoundation ). He tells @BBCNewsnight he doesn’t know how he’d manage
A sustainable food system?
That depends where you stand.
In my estate, you can get blueberry vapes — but not blueberries.
I’m building something different with @FoodisCare.

Countryside <-> council estate food poverty
This Saturday the author of Divide, @Jonesthejourno and I will be sharing the stage at EASustain discussing the UK food system. 🍲

“Tinderbox UK may be one shock away from food riots. Weakened food security could tip into unrest.”
It’s time for the government to improve domestic food security. And that is achieved by supporting British farmers rather than financially punishing them.

One shock could spark social unrest and even food riots in the UK, according to dozens of the country’s top food experts, reports The @guardian. Describing the UK #FoodSystem as a 'Tinderbox'.
The group identified a series of issues creating vulnerability, including the climate crisis, low incomes, poor farming policy and fragile just-in-time supply chains.

The full analysis is published in the @MDPIOpenAccess journal, Sustainability, and was produced by consulting more than 30 food system experts from academia, government and industry.
It highlights that our broken food system needs to be transformed - changing the way our food is produced and consumed - to future-proof food for all of us.
By using our precious resources more intelligently we can create a world with higher standards of living — tackling climate change, protecting nature, and reducing inequality.

Why is this story about how the UK is one shock away from food riots relegated to The Guardian's food section, alongside articles about how to make the best cookie dough?
No wonder people still don't get it.
