The term "dating" did emerge from prostitution, and so did the general practice, and early 20th century "charity girls" were deemed competitors who undercut the wages of prostitutes.

Basically, "easy" girls who weren't formal prostitutes figured out that they could blur the line a little by getting dinners and so on paid for.

Modern people don't fully realize this but "paying for a date" isn't "providing." It isn't confirmation that you can provide. It isn't "trad." It's low-grade prostitution, and always has been.

Dating is paying for companionship with sex as an unspoken bonus. The old criticism that men would expect sex if they took a woman out was fair but it ignores the truth that the reason men expected this wasn't because they were jerks or sexist but because that IS what "dating" was about.

Today, we treat long-term dating as a precursor to marriage but it's not. The difference is in the commitment. If two people act as fully committed then they're married, regardless of paperwork. Modern dating though is long-term, persistent "companionship" without commitment.

It's harsh but long-term, low-commitment dating is just prostitution. Always has been.
