For much of Imperial Chinese history there was a prcatice of declining the throne three times before accepting it—known as sanrang (三讓, meaning "three polite declines").

The man who would be King defers the title until the time is right.

Yuanzhang did exactly that.

While the rebellion absorbed the Yuan’s attention, Zhu built a disciplined foundation.

He outlasted the other rebels, defeated the Yuan’s remaining strength, and founded the Ming in 1368.

The broad tent had incubated its own successor.

An advantage an existing order has at the start of any rebellion is usually numbers.

The leaders of the Red Turban rebellion therefore needed a broad tent: anyone willing to oppose the Yuan could be useful.

Unwittingly, they created an incubation ground for the eventual victor

The broad-tent movement now had to expend its energy facing the full weight of the prevailing order.
Its leaders, armies and resources were drawn into the struggle against the Yuan.

And this is where an opportunity appeared in which a better organiser could emerge.
