Got a signed copy of Thinking Sideways from Jennifer Shahade herself 🥰🥰🥰 and I’m taking my time with it, one chapter at a time, letting every part sink in.

The way she uses chess to talk about decision-making is brilliant, and honestly you don’t even need to play chess to get everything out of it. “Long variation, wrong variation” is going to live in my head forever. You can plan ten moves out and still miss what’s right in front of you on move one. That’s not just a chess lesson, that’s life.

And the bit about the wrong rook problem and secretary problem, how the best decision makers aren’t chasing perfection, they’re just okay picking good and moving on. I needed that reminder more than I realized.

This is only the first few chapters and I’m already convinced. This book is a gift in itself. Chess player or not, everyone should read it. There’s so much here about how to actually make good decisions in your own life.
