The way some women paint men as the *only* pedophiles or predators really frustrates me. When I was 16, a married woman made sexual advances toward me. The same year, and even after I turned 17, a female teacher (around 35–38) did the same. That same teacher was later revealed to have been sexually involved with at least two of my classmates. Eventually, I found out she and two other female teachers had been with five boys total from my class and the art class.

The reason the “men are the only monsters” narrative persists is because most guys stay silent about these experiences because society will ask them “didn’t you enjoy it why are you complaining”. Yes, what’s wrong is wrong — full stop. But if we’re going to condemn predatory behavior, we can’t make it gender-based. Female predators exist too, and pretending they don’t only protects them and silences victims.

And while we’re on the topic of age: there’s nothing inherently wrong with a 30-year-old man dating a 20-year-old woman, or a 30-year-old woman dating a 20-year-old man. Both are consenting adults. We should be able to make that distinction without pretending every age gap is predatory.

Ironically, this heated "Olodo Uprising" conversation is actually a good sign for Nigeria.

Nigeria is finally having its first endogenous, organically-defined culture war over an issue that is intrinsically important to Nigerian society.

Every other culture war that post-colonial Nigeria has fought until now has been imported Yankee slop, or imported religious slop, or both (LGBTQ, 3rd wave Feminism, "sexual liberation", tithing, NYSC hijab, etc).

A society fighting internal culture wars over its own self-defined issues is a society that is finally obtaining an identity of its own. Long may the war continue, and may the olodos suffer crushing defeat that dooms their uprising to the chapters of a Jude Bela historical documentary released in 2045.
