EYES WIDE SHUT: THE MISSING 20 MINUTES

You know, this is as good a time as any to finally address the missing 20 minutes from Eyes Wide Shut. It’s a story that has been circulating for many years, so let me tell you what I actually know and don’t know.

For context, my father always had his outtakes incinerated once a film was finished, specifically to prevent the studio from later re-editing his work or creating alternative versions.

There has been a lot of speculation that some 20 minutes were removed from Eyes Wide Shut after he died. This will be very disappointing to many people, but I certainly did not hear anything about a missing 20 minutes at the time, nor have I heard anything since that would confirm such a section ever existed. I guess you could stop reading right here. But if you’re interested in the details, please read on.

Of course, I was not in a position to know everything that may have happened before or immediately after my father’s death. At the time, I was living in Los Angeles, writing the score for a different movie. I flew to England, utterly traumatized, to be there for the preparations for my father’s funeral and burial. But I had to return to LA the day after his burial—stricken with grief and exhaustion—to complete the score I was contractually obligated to finish, which I barely managed. So I wasn’t there, in more ways than one, for whatever discussions may have followed.

The only alteration I heard about at the time was the use of CGI—computer-generated figures—to obscure some of the nudity in the orgy scene, which Warner Brothers wanted in order to secure an R rating for the film. But I did not hear that any shots or scenes were removed.

When my father died, Eyes Wide Shut had reached picture lock and was moving through the final stages of post-production. It had just been shown to the studio heads, I assume with a temporary music track, while the final sound mix and some of the music work were still to be completed.

This was 1999, in the era of physical film distribution. The film was edited on Avid, but that should not be confused with the kind of permanent digital archive people imagine today. The Avid material consisted of standard-definition video transfers made from the rushes—720 × 576 pixels—and used for editing. They were working copies, not a high-resolution digital preservation of the original negative. There wasn’t a high-resolution digital version of every take sitting on a server somewhere, as people might reasonably imagine today.

There were, of course, all the 35mm rush prints, as well as the original camera negative containing the outtakes. Eventually, long after the film was finished and released, the 35mm rush prints and the original negative of outtakes were incinerated. The original master negative of the finished film and the intermediate film elements made from it were, of course, kept in storage.

Once the picture was locked, the original camera negative would have been physically cut to match the final Avid edit. Once the negative itself had been cut, you couldn’t simply undo those cuts and rearrange the film: each cut destroyed a frame at both the head and tail of the shot. The master negative of the finished film was then used to make interpositives, from which internegatives were made, and those internegatives would have been used to make the 35mm theatrical release prints. The original negative of the outtakes never went through that process because, of course, those shots were not part of the finished film.

Someone might say, “But then, if the missing 20-minute edit exists, it would be preserved on the Avid!” But editing the film on Avid does not mean all of that material was preserved indefinitely. This was not an era in which every piece of editorial media was automatically retained on servers for decades, and I have no knowledge of whether any of the Avid editorial material from the production still exists. La SNCF a été créée pour disparaître. Sa fin était programmée dès le premier jour : 1982.

Le 31 août 1937, l'État français réunit d'un trait de plume tous les trains du pays. Jusque-là, ils ne lui appartiennent pas.

Ils sont partagés entre 5 compagnies privées, 5 empires rivaux. Le Nord, aux mains des Rothschild, file vers la Belgique et les mines. Le PLM descend vers Lyon et la Méditerranée, et emmène les riches sur la Côte d'Azur. L'Est, le Paris-Orléans et le Midi se partagent le reste.

Chacune a ses gares, ses couleurs, ses affiches, ses uniformes. Traverser la France, alors, c'est parfois changer de compagnie en route, et même de gare, en portant soi-même ses malles d'un bout de Paris à l'autre.

Elles ont laissé une trace qu'on croise encore tous les jours : les 6 grandes gares de Paris, tournées chacune vers une direction du pays, héritées de ces réseaux d'autrefois.

Mais dans les années 1930, ils sont à genoux. La voiture et le camion leur arrachent voyageurs et marchandises. Les pertes s'entassent par milliards, et c'est déjà l'État qui les renfloue.

Alors il tranche. Il fond les 5 compagnies et ses 2 réseaux dans une seule maison. La SNCF est née.

Mais il ne veut pas tout avaler d'un coup. Il monte une société à moitié publique, dont il garde 51 %, signée pour 45 ans seulement. Un mariage à durée déterminée.

Au terme du contrat, en 1982, tout devait être renégocié.

Cette année-là, l'État a racheté les dernières parts et gardé la maison pour lui seul.

Les vieilles compagnies, elles, ne se sont jamais tout à fait effacées. Montez à la gare de Lyon pour filer vers le sud : vous partez encore de la gare que le PLM avait bâtie pour vendre du soleil aux Parisiens.

La plus grande compagnie aérienne française n'a pas trouvé son nom toute seule. Elle l'a demandé à des journalistes.

En 1933, le transport aérien français se meurt. Des lignes qui se doublent, 4 compagnies rivales qui s'épuisent, et l'Aéropostale, la cinquième, en faillite depuis 2 ans.

L'État tranche et impose la fusion. Une seule société doit hériter des avions, des lignes et des dettes de toutes les autres.

Il reste à la baptiser. À la conférence de presse qui annonce l'opération, le directeur général se tourne vers la salle et demande aux journalistes de lui trouver un nom, quelque chose que le monde entier puisse comprendre.

Un vieux chroniqueur d'aviation, Georges Raffalovitch, propose : Air France. Adopté à l'unanimité, sur-le-champ.

Le 30 août 1933, la société prend officiellement ce nom. Elle démarre avec 259 appareils dépareillés, ramassés chez les absorbées.

L'emblème aussi est un héritage. Il vient d'Air Orient, une compagnie d'hydravions qui reliait Marseille à Saïgon en 10 jours et demi, avec 17 escales.

Une tête de cheval, des ailes d'oiseau, une queue de dragon. Le personnel n'a jamais appelé ça autrement que la crevette.

La cérémonie de baptême a lieu 6 semaines plus tard, au Bourget.

Depuis, l'entreprise a changé de flotte, de métier et d'actionnaires. Le nom trouvé par un journaliste dans une salle de conférence, lui, n'a jamais bougé.

They were a people without an empire, a civilization without a standing army, masters of the sea who left behind neither great monuments nor an enduring name. The Phoenicians—seafarers, traders, and cunning merchants—we think arose from the craggy shores of present-day Lebanon, their city-states like Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos clinging to the Mediterranean like barnacles on a ship’s hull. By 1200 BC, as the Bronze Age world collapsed in chaos, the Phoenicians flourished. They built sleek ships with curved prows and sailed beyond the horizons of lesser men, establishing trading depots and colonies from Cyprus to Spain, most notably at Carthage, that fierce and fateful city that would one day challenge Rome.

Their great legacy, however, was not conquest but language. As the Greeks emerged from their own dark age, bereft of the written word, the Phoenicians handed them an alphabet—twenty-two symbols that, with adaptation, would form the basis of Western literacy.

Yet, like all great mariners of history, they invite modern speculation. Where did they truly go? Some claim Phoenician ships, driven by storm or curiosity, reached the Azores, or even the Americas—wild conjecture without any real evidence. The Bible speaks of King Solomon’s fleet, aided by Tyrian sailors, bringing back gold from the distant land of Ophir, a place now lost to time.

More grounded in fact was their eventual destruction. By the sixth century BC, Tyre fell to Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon, and later, to Alexander the Great, who built a causeway from the mainland and butchered its defenders. Carthage, the last great outpost of Phoenician power, met its doom at the hands of Rome in 146 BC, its ruins salted so that nothing might grow again. The surviving Phoenician cities of the Levant were also absorbed by Rome. Their tongue faded, their autonomy vanished. Only the shadow of their achievements remained, hidden in the alphabets of Europe and the legends of lost voyages.
