PhD in Biopsychology @UMich. Data Science. Addiction and spatial navigation. Software design is fun. Waste too much time to optimize things. Teethy dog owner

For the past decade, our team at Meta Reality Labs (previously CTRL-labs) has been dedicated to developing a neuromotor interface.
Our goal is to address the Human Computer Interaction challenge of providing effortless, intuitive, and efficient input to computers.

Seems about the same per person for a shared 2 bedroom apartment. Even now my current non subsidized location which is a 15 minute bus ride away from my lab would equate to ~950/month per person.
@tnagarKaRaja @SitzUnseen @jenn_rubin Yeah, and considering the subsidized housing for under 800/month (including utilities and internet) in my experience it was plenty to work with
@SarahE_PhD @neurodevKathy It's also interesting that projects change hands all the time in industry but they still end up getting finished. 2 weeks of knowledge transfers are enough to keep the ball rolling with another employee
@JulieTheBatgirl @neurodevKathy Agreed. That shows ample preparation and respect from the PI's side. It's not like first authors don't want to publish their work, there's just a major shift in priorities
N=1 advice to the incoming PhD cohorts:
1st: Congrats—enjoy it!
2nd: You’re there to train, not mass produce pubs.
3rd: Ask Qs & help when you need it.
4th: Incorporate training for academic & non-academic jobs—only 1/4 end up in faculty roles.
5th: It’s a marathon not a sprint.
@tnagarKaRaja What, you don't like applying to literally 100 job listings to break into competitive industries, while other people can get in with a simple referral? 🤡
@GradSkoolStrugs I think academia is more like a startup. We wear a lot of hats, expect to be on call, and work very closely with the "founders." Unfortunately, I don't think many startups survive with just 9-5 employees. But it would be nice for industry to recognize the similar environments
@AnupamAich4 @Napaaqtuk Fully agree. If you're working in a newly formed lab there's tremendous value in doing an internship at a mature company. There's code and data rigor at large companies that is very useful in a smaller lab.
@Science_Caitlin Maybe you don't realize what you're already doing in your free time is a hobby? For example, getting deep into a celebrity's background sounds like a hobby to me🤷♂️What we enjoy doesn't have to be traditional
@phdandpups Lol yeah! I got a lot of anxiety about it then realized in the grand scheme of things everyone can wait (as long as it's within reason haha). During the PhD it's like, if it fails it's your fault and you need a solution at all costs.
@phdandpups For real, just having that work time being constant means you can plan the rest of your time with certainty, rather than hoping the PhD doesn't randomly take over your weeknights/weekends
