Scorpions - Wind Of Change (1990)
The song was written primarily by lead singer Klaus Meine. The inspiration came during the band’s visit to the Soviet Union in 1989, specifically at the Moscow Music Peace Festival at Moscow’s Lenin Stadium (August 13, 1989).
The Scorpions performed in front of some 300,000 people alongside bands such as Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, and Bon Jovi. It was the era of Gorbachev’s perestroika and glasnost, and Meine was struck by the atmosphere of hope and unity, as well as the fact that a Russian audience was cheering for a German band (former “enemies” from the Cold War). That night he felt that music united people and that the world was changing.
Meine began writing the lyrics shortly afterward, whistling the main melody because he wasn’t confident playing the guitar. The lyrics speak of a wind of change that brings peace, brotherhood, and a better future (“The wind of change blows straight into the face of time / Like a stormwind that will ring the freedom bell for peace of mind”).
Although the song does not directly address the fall of the Berlin Wall (which occurred a few months later, in November 1989), the music video used images of the wall and was quickly associated with that historic moment.
It was released as a single in January 1991 and became a massive hit: number one in many countries, one of the best-selling singles in rock history, and a global anthem of peace and freedom.
“In And Out Of Love” - Bon Jovi
It performed modestly compared to later mega-hits but helped keep momentum going for the band. The album 7800° Fahrenheit reached #37 on the Billboard 200 and went Gold https://t.co/wgDLlDREih
Uli Jon Roth live at the Tally Ho Theatre in Virginia tonight playing Sails of Charon.
Some guitar playing has no business being this good in a room this intimate.
