Some people have argued that since the left has acted in some bad way, such as illegally destroying statues/property, that means the right is justified in acting the same. I think this argument merits a longer response because there is one version of the argument I agree with, and one I don't.

If a group is using a set of rules to impose various restrictions, such as against free speech, a good way to expose and destroy the system is to LEAN INTO the rules. Start following those rules to the letter as strictly as possible and apply it to the people who created the rules. Put them under the same restrictions they wish to impose on others.

This is what I was referring to with Claudine Gay. She and Harvard want to establish a set of hyper politically correct restrictions, however she and others want to apply them only to selective groups of people. Applying it in a universal way so that white people, jews, asians, cannot be discriminated against destroys their argument and will to advocate for the system. Because the system only exists to create the negative outcome. The PC system Gay and other push exists to make discrimination against certain groups (white people) acceptable and give special allowances and exceptions to other groups. (Not white people)

The situation where the tactic works and is good:
1) The system was designed to create a negative or bias outcome against a group of people.
2) The goal is to destroy the bad system.

The above tactic exposes why the system sucks and why it should be removed. The important key here is the tactic WEAKENS THE SYSTEM.

So where does this argument not apply? Well lets look at the statue debate and how it differs.

There are various groups of people on the left who are illegally destroying statues because they believe the statue is offensive. So therefore people on the right can also illegally destroy a statue. Or at least that is the logic presented.

This is not like the first situation. From the beginning, the group of people tearing down the statue are doing so illegally. They are acting against the system. The answer would be to hold them accountable through the system or even increase punishment in the system if the action continues. The rules itself is not faulty, it is that people are breaking the rules and not being held accountable. So the solution is to bring accountability.

Second, the purpose is often different. Many people saying, "well they did it so we can do" are not acting with the goal of destroying a system they believe is unjust, they are acting out of a desire for revenge. The desire for revenge will also weaken the system overall. So what is the system being weakened in the statue debate? Free Speech. And in the specific case Matt Walsh was referring to, Freedom of Religion.

This is why this idea, of "they did it so I can to" doesn't work here. The goal for Matt Walsh is not to uphold freedom of speech or religion. He does not care about those principles beyond them serving him. He is laying out an argument that his religious beliefs and principles supersedes freedom of speech and religion. He is arguing, the same as some Muslims who believe they have a right to tear down pictures of Muhammad, that his religious principles means he gets to violate the law.
