The more I learn about NZ's India Free Trade Agreement, the worse it becomes! It feels as if you have signed away our sovereignty for an FTA @chrisluxonmp, @toddmcclaymp, @chrishipkins & @dbseymour!

I was already concerned about the unlimited students visas, the intellectual property transfer for horticulture (with no IP protection), the $20B investment commitment, the insertion of UNDRIP & the Paris Agreement, but these 👇uncapped pathways means even less jobs for Kiwis in our own country!

🚩This is damning for Luxon, National, Act & Labour. The FTA is as bad as they are denying it is.

Footage most people haven’t seen from the India FTA select committee,reveals that FTA has duplicitous clauses that determines the NZ $ 33 Billion of direct investment into India IS an obligation. Hats off to National MP & Chair of the committee Tim van de Molen for identifying the sub clause and its implications, and for pushing back on the bureaucrats & a Labour MP.

First time i’ve ever commended a Greens MP, however Lawerence Xu Nan correctly states that the FTA will only add 0.1% ($500m) of GDP by 2046, which is 1/40th of the NZ $33 billion of investment from NZ we are expected to ‘promote’ into India.

Vangelous Vitalis (dep. Sec Trade & economic) replies that treasury traditionally understates the GDP growth in the modelling, but they expect it to be much larger than 0.1% “just like it was with china”

The problem with Vitalis reply, is that 15 years after signing the China FTA, exports to China while larger than forecast, they were just 2.5 times larger than the original forecast.

So for NZ to break even on the NZ $33 billion committed to India, Treasury’s forecasted exports would need to be 66 times bigger.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ We need to beat the forecast by SIXTY SIX TIMES. Mind blowing.

This brings us to the $33 billion dollar question - highlighted by Tim Van de Molen. In article 9.10. It allows India to take remedial measures (reapply tarrifs) until NZ meets its obligations to promote $33 BN into India.

Vitalis points to clause 9.2, which frames this as only an “aim” — a point Van de Molen accepts. However, he remains very concerned by 9.10(3), which states that if India believes insufficient progress has been made on one-way investment, all concessions can be withdrawn until NZ (specifically) delivers $20 billion US ($33 Billion) in investment.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Three times van de Molen (a farmer) circles back t sub clause 3, Vitalis brings in his legal representative, and then Labours Vanushi Walters (a NGO Lawyer) infers Tim is reading it wrong, before concerning he is right and then says “oh it’s just poor drafting” - the whole issue is left unresolved, after Nationals Tim Costley (edited out) interrupts like a dumbo to bring up student numbers and Winston Peters - side tracking the discussion before van de Molen once again circled back to the issue before Walters again changes topic to some frivolous issue.

Tim van de Molen has his head on his shoulders and is in the wrong party.

Luxon has been conned by India - and it’s us who will pay the price.

Luxon responds to media about the $20 Billion US commitment he made to Modhi after he pulled his pants down in his desperate bid to attract indian voters.

He also lies that India has an agreement to invest and equal amount into NZ - that is total bullshit.

No where in that FTA does it state that they are required to invest one red cent. The clause commits us to invest NZD$33 BILLION or India can enact a claw back claws - and that means NZ not only lose the meagre tarrif concessions but has to pay back whatever concessions we have received.

The NZ govt has a website up dedicated to assisting NZ business to offshore to India. It’s the most despicable thing I have ever seen.

With the UK considering limits on VPNs as a part of their ‘Australia-plus’ style social media ban, vigilance matters when ideas like that appear in New Zealand too. 

The Free Speech Union will continue pushing back against policies that erode New Zealanders' freedoms before they become law.

Should parents or government protect kids from social media?

National and Labour parties support the U16 Bill and want you to believe that the only solution to children's online safety is government control. However, Google Family Link has been available to New Zealand parents for free since 2017. It allows parents to do the following:

1. SCREEN TIME MANAGEMENT
- Set daily limits for device usage.
- Schedule bedtime lockouts (Downtime).
- Block distracting apps during school hours.

2. APP CONTROLS
- Approve or block all app store downloads.
- Set individual time limits for specific apps.

3. LOCATION TRACKING
- View the child's device location on a live map.
- Set notifications for when they arrive or leave a place.

4. CONTENT & PRIVACY FILTERS
- Restrict mature websites on Google Chrome.
- Set safety filters for YouTube and Google Search.
- Manage device permissions like camera and microphone access.

5. DEVICE TOOLS
- Remotely lock or ring the child's device.
- Check the device's remaining battery life.

This is far more effective than proving age or banning use of VPNs. The U16 Bill is National and Labour's covert way to implement legislation that will allow them to legally track all New Zealanders online.

NZ First understands and agrees with the intent of the law change, but we will not be supporting the progression of legislation to ban social media for under-16s.

We communicated our concerns to National over the past few months and again last week. Our stance has not changed.

We have been concerned at the ambiguity and lack of certainty in the proposed legislation around banning VPNs and the potential movement towards the use of digital ID to enforce the law. New Zealand First does not support either of these measures.

We have also questioned the progression of this legislation given the failure of Australia to address under-16s using social media with the use of a similar law.

Turns out fewer than 1 man in 10 could vote in the year Britain banned the slave trade. No woman could. Your ancestors could hang for stealing a sheep, get shipped across the world for petty theft, or go down a mine at 8 years old. In Manchester, the average age of death in a labouring family was 17.

They weren't running the slave trade. They were underneath it too.

Which is what makes what happened next worth knowing.

In 1772 an enslaved man named James Somerset walked free from an English court, because English law couldn't hold a slave.

In 1791, 300,000 families just stopped buying slave sugar. No march, no riot, just a decision made at 300,000 kitchen tables.

In 1792, 519 petitions carrying 390,000 names hit Parliament, most signed by people who couldn't vote themselves.

In 1807, Britain banned the trade.

Then the slave owners sent Britain a bill for the 800,000 people they still held. 💷 £20 million. About 40% of the entire government budget at the time.

The Treasury says it wasn't paid off until 2015. So if your family paid British tax before then, they helped buy 800,000 people their freedom.

From 1808 the Royal Navy spent 60 years hunting slave ships at sea: 1,600 stopped, 150,000 people freed, and 1,600 British sailors dead, mostly of disease, buried thousands of miles from home. ⚓

In 1816 they ended two centuries of Barbary corsairs enslaving Europeans.

In 1896 a war that lasted 38 minutes ended slavery in Zanzibar. 🇹🇿

Almost every country on Earth outlaws slavery today.

That fight was paid for largely at British expense, by British hands.🇬🇧

So why haven't you heard any of this?

Because within living memory, someone rewrote the story. You got taught the crime. Not the cure.

The powerful exploited the world. They exploited their own people first. It was those people who ended slavery. 🇬🇧

NZ is one of only 5 countries in the world who allow non citizens to vote, AND we have the least amount of restrictions.

This immigration gerrymandering has to stop. Only citizens of a country should be able to determine its destiny.

Why are we seeing National, Labour and Act grovel for votes from immigrants?
it’s because migrants on a visa are a potential vote. That in turn leads to these parties wooing immigrants with pro immigrant policies.

David Seymour campaigned for Indians to be able to carry Kirpans in public, National allowed prime farms to be sold to Chinese, and now National, Labour and Act have given Indians the ultimate box of treats - the India FTA.

It’s a viscious cycle, and why the UK’s politicians pander to Islam… a total disregard for the concept of a Nation state - which leads to the destruction of a country.

Potentially hundreds of thousands of non citizens could decide OUR future.
