South Africa sent one squadron of fighter pilots to Korea, and they fought so hard and lost so many that the American unit they flew with still honors them at every ceremony, more than seventy years later, by playing the opening bars of the South African anthem before the American one. They were 2 Squadron of the South African Air Force, and they called themselves the Flying Cheetahs.
When the United Nations called, South Africa answered with its air force. The Flying Cheetahs arrived in late 1950 and were attached to an American fighter wing, and they threw themselves into the brutal, dangerous work of the fighter bomber, flying low over enemy territory, hunting tanks, trains, troops, and supply lines, right down in the dirt where the antiaircraft fire was thickest.
They flew an astonishing number of missions, more than twelve thousand sorties over the course of the war. At first they flew the aging propeller driven F-51 Mustang, a fine old fighter but slow and vulnerable to ground fire on those low level attacks, and the losses were heavy. Later they converted to the F-86 Sabre jet, flying the SAAF's first ever jet combat missions in the skies over Korea.
The price they paid was steep. The little squadron lost thirty four pilots killed in Korea, a grievous toll for so small a unit, flying a wildly disproportionate share of the dangerous fighter bomber sorties. For their skill and their sacrifice, the Flying Cheetahs were awarded both the United States and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations.
And then came the tribute that makes their story unforgettable. The Americans who flew alongside them were so moved by the courage and the losses of the South Africans that the US fighter wing they served with adopted a permanent custom in their honor. To this day, at that wing's ceremonies, before the American national anthem is played, they first play the opening bars of the old South African anthem, a standing salute to the Flying Cheetahs who fought and died beside them in Korea.
It is one of the quiet, beautiful legacies of that war. A single squadron from the far tip of Africa, flying and dying over a frozen Asian peninsula, remembered forever by the allies who never forgot what they gave.
Seamus Coleman โ one of our greatest-ever servants and captains โ has announced his proud Everton playing career spanning more than 17 years will come to an end when his contract expires next month.
Thank you for everything, Seamus. ๐

Morecambe FC has zero directors, less than 10 senior players and staff & players still haven't received their full June wages.
Two former directors of the club, who resigned last week, say that we are "days" away from being thrown out of the football pyramid.
