As a young guy you are not excited to potentially earn 20% on your measly 2 grand in the next 2 years.

(you are not thinking 20 years) and you justify that because even if your money 10x in the next 20 years you will still only have 20k and can't afford anything with that.

I am not saying this is correct I am just saying that is what they are thinking to answer your question
