To those in the international music community who have stayed silent after the massacre at the Supernova Music Festival last week: Where are you?
It could have been you or your artist onstage. It could have been your friends and fans in the crowd. It WAS the people who stream your music. It WAS the fans that buy your tickets. Commenting on a tragic, nuanced conflict without a firsthand connection to or knowledge of the history can be complicated.
Condemning the mass slaughter and rape of innocent civilians attending a music festival is not.
I still believe that dance music, which has historically been a refuge for marginalized communities all over the world, has the potential to bridge cultural and religious divides- yes, even between Israelis and Arabs, and Muslims and Jews. We have seen it, and experienced it, firsthand.
But it doesn't work if innocent Jewish lives are treated as expendable. There is nothing justified, or inevitable, about what happened on October 7, 2023.
Stand up for them, and if not them, us. Because it could have been us.
One day, if you remain silent, it might be.
