Abu Abdillahi, Muhammad ibn Abdillah Ibn Battuta was a renowned Moroccan explorer and scholar who travelled extensively throughout Africa, Middle-East, Asia, and Europe during the 14th century. Born in 1304G in Tangier, Morocco, he was born over 720 years ago. I visited the place for the first time some years ago.

He embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned over three decades, covering over 75,000 miles (around 117, 000 kilometres). With his insatiable curiosity and love for adventure, Ibn Battuta documented his experiences in vivid detail, providing valuable insights into the cultures, customs, and geography of the regions he visited. His travels took him to distant lands, including the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, West Africa, and East Africa, where he encountered diverse peoples, witnessed breathtaking landscapes, and learned about various traditions. In fact, he visited over 40 countries based on modern-day classifications.

After the trip, he wrote a book in Arabic, entitled as "Tuḥfat an-Nuẓẓār fī Gharāʾib al-Amṣār wa ʿAjāʾib al-Asfār" rendered unto English as "A Masterpiece to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Traveling." The title reflects the book's content, which is a travelogue of Ibn Battuta's experiences and observations during his journeys.

Through his writings, Ibn Battuta's legacy has endured, offering a fascinating glimpse into the medieval world and inspiring generations of travellers, scholars, and historians. He was specifically fascinated by Granada, Saville, Cordoba in Andalus (Now Spain), then Damascus in Syria, Alexandria in Egypt, Beijing in China, some towns in India, Moscow in Russia among others.

He stands out as one of the all-time greatest travellers in history. It is undoubtedly true that those who live see, but those who travel see more Wonders!
