While I was in it I noticed the guys who pushed back were usually the first to get fired or leave voluntarily. Meanwhile, incompetent yes-men stick around. Collecting their paycheck. Taking their skull fucking.
The system doesn't fire you for being strong. It just makes life easier for people who aren't. The compliant get promoted. The skeptical get labeled "difficult." The self-sufficient get managed out because they can't be controlled.
I sat in a meeting where five people stood up, one by one, and gave speeches about trusting a man they had all privately told me was a liar. That was the day I realized I was surrounded by lobotomized slugs who couldn't say what they actually believed.
I'm not going to pretend it was all bad. I met some of the best people I've ever known. The industry was fun. I miss a lot of it. But the first morning I didn't have to go in? Pure relief. Fear was there — no plan, no safety net. But the freedom swallowed it.
