I relate to this. My Mum left school at 12 to work, married at 19, first kid at 20. My Dad left school at 14 and fixed car bodies (extremely well) for nearly 50 years. They both worked so hard and I’m glad I can take care of them now.
As a first-gen student, I've always known that other students with legacies in academia or family histories of college education have inherent advantages over me, but I don't think I've ever been able to see and understand that as clearly as today.
@Amcinerneyleo I wanted to apply for teaching/demonstrating positions during my PhD (I demonstrated during my Honours year and it was great) but I was advised not to.
@Amcinerneyleo I had a 90 minute commute each way because I couldn’t afford to move closer to my place of study and sometimes I was doing 14 hour days in the lab or entire weekends so I was truly exhausted for the duration of my PhD.
