In #Tigray, heavy rain, strong winds destroy more than 20 shelters at #IDP site, injure residents

More than 20 temporary shelters at the "70 Kare" (Seba Kare) Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) center in Tigray were completely destroyed after heavy rain and strong winds struck the site on 04 August, according to the Western Tigray Civil Society Organization (Tsilal).

Speaking to Tigray TV, the center's coordinator, Zebenom Kidu, said the storm left the shelters uninhabitable, caused extensive damage to residents' belongings, and further worsened the already precarious conditions facing displaced families.

Zebenom said several people sustained injuries during the incident, including elderly residents, who were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Describing the situation as an added burden for an already vulnerable population, he appealed to humanitarian organizations to provide immediate emergency assistance to affected residents.

In a statement, Tsilal said the destruction has deepened the humanitarian challenges confronting internally displaced people at the site and stressed that durable solutions remain urgently needed. The organization reiterated that the long-term resolution to the displacement crisis lies in creating conditions that allow displaced residents to return safely and voluntarily to their places of origin.

News: National Grade 12 exit exam begins in #Tigray after weeks-long delay over missing papers

The paper-based examination officially commenced on Wednesday, 29 July, at #Mekelle University, where Tigray Education Bureau Head Dr. Kiros Guush, Mekelle University President Dr. Fana Hagos, and Mekelle City Mayor Hailay Aregawi jointly launched the examination.

The delay in delivering paper-based examinations made Tigray the only region where thousands of candidates were unable to begin the examinations on the original schedule.
EAES did not indicate whether the paper-based examination materials administered this week were newly prepared or the same papers originally scheduled for the July 9 examination.

Nearly 80 million Ethiopians experienced moderate or severe food insecurity between 2023 and 2025, while more than two-thirds of the country’s population could not afford a healthy diet last year, according to the latest State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 report, which notes that its national estimate for Ethiopia does not include the war-torn Tigray region due to data limitations.

The 251 pages report, jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (#FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (#IFAD), #UNICEF, the World Food Program (#WFP), and the World Health Organization (#WHO), estimates that 79.4 million people, or 60.1 percent of Ethiopia's population, experienced moderate or severe food insecurity during the 2023–2025 period.
