CONGRATULATIONS to Full Professor Maria Gallegos on your big promotion! @mop_head this is so well deserved you are an amazing scientist, mentor teacher and colleague.
So, after nearly 9 years at Bleacher Report, the seemingly endless wave of industry layoffs finally came for me. Proud of everything we accomplished in those 9 years, and grateful for the many people along the way who kept my head on straight(ish) and made work pretty rad.
This big poster was at the entrance of the A’s clubhouse at the Coliseum in recent years. Notice the high leg kick and elbow tucked inside the knee, a unique style that kids used to try to emulate. One of the most marvelous and picturesque pitchers in history.
@JeffFaraudo As I recall, the crowd at a "retirement" event for John at Jupiter included Jack Clark, Ron Rivera and George Seifert. ... Thank you for writing this, Jeff.
@StoneLarry John Crumpacker, wearing a big safari hat, staking out the prime spot outside the hammer cage, notebook at the ready, three hours before the first track event.
Devastated to learn of the death of John Crumpacker, a close friend for nearly 50 years. He was the sports editor of the Daily Cal (the Cal school paper) when I wandered in as a freshman in 1976 to see if they needed writers. He assigned me to Cal baseball, and a career was born.
I wrote Skip Caray this letter when I was 13 (excuse the typos). I checked the mailbox every day hoping for a reply. It came a couple months later. I still remember opening it.
I finally got to meet Skip at a game at Turner in 98 along with my cousin Jake. I was star struck.
