In economics, there’s a useful distinction - often traced to Frank Knight - between risk and uncertainty.

Risk's the dispersion around an estimated EV (use Kelly criterion). Uncertainty's the harder question: what is the EV?

True risk premia may reward bearing unhedgeable uncertainty, not merely hedgeable risk.
