I strongly suspect that future historians will look back upon JD Vance's 2026 interview with Joe Rogan as a turning point in his political career.

Up until that point, most Americans interpreted Vance as something of a Trump mini-me: a scrappy brawler for the boss who shared his political beliefs and wanted to be a 4 year extension of his political brand. This was probably true of most of his supporters and detractors alike.

But the interview revealed something most people had not yet paid attention to about Vance: he holds a lot of beliefs that are eccentric, to put it mildly, and that chafe with the political intuitions of most Americans. His style is in fact distinct from Trump, and he adheres to a thoroughgoing postliberal philosophical viewpoint that does not even map onto Trump (even though it does share some particular policy prescriptions with Trump).

Even more so, the weirdness around Vance that Americans saw on that interview prompted closer scrutiny of his other spoken and written words in the weeks that followed. People examined his foreign policy platform and noticed it wasn't a coherent philosophy of military restraint so much it was a hodgepodge of selectively-applied isolationist tenets with glaring exceptions (i.e. bombing alleged drug boats) and an added layer of incompetent execution through badly botched "deals" by a guy who was way out of his depth. They looked at his new book "Communion" and found crazy tirades against the existence of GDP. They listened to his interviews about Milton Friedman and his speeches name-dropping Huey Long and heard something more than a bit reminiscent of the AOC left. They saw older clips of him repeatedly peddling half-baked theories from the outer fringes of economics that lent serious consideration to intentionally abandoning the dollar as a global reserve currency. They noticed that he has a weird relationship with Tucker Carlson - including a conspicuous reticence to criticize him over any of the increasingly-deranged things on his podcast, even though Vance has made a name for himself elsewhere as an insult-flinging attack dog who snaps into derogatory one-liners at even the slightest provocation. And they noticed his economic prescriptions were completely tone-deaf to visible public discontent with affordability issues, with weak economic indicators, and with the associated costs of tariffs and similar policies - almost as if Vance was telling America to suck it up, because these things were happening for their own good.

And while all that was being noticed, many Americans got their first real glimpse of the Vanceguard: his coterie of perpetually-online "influencers" (read: grifters) who instantly mobilized to shield him from *any* criticism over anything, no matter how warranted, and who thought it was a good idea to brand said criticism of Vance as an "Op" when they were just quoting Vance's own words back to him.

Summer 2026 will be remembered as the moment when ordinary Americans started paying attention to Vance himself, as distinct from Vance the chief rider on Trump's coattails. And the irony of it all is that it wasn't an "Op" at all - it was Vance's habit of blurting out weird and unsettling things on a national stage to the point that ordinary people started noticing something was off.
