The Office of Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Newark promotes the dignity of each person and seeks to express that in works of compassion and solidarity.
On this Feast of St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr, and Patron Saint of the Poor, may we be ever grateful for poor in our lives we are privileged to accompany and serve.
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). Mary’s complete acceptance of God’s will transformed human history and set in motion our redemption in Christ her Son.
“The Lord will give you the bread you need and the water for which you thirst. No longer will your Teacher hide himself, but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher. While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears: This is the way; walk in it” (Is 30:20–21).
We give thanks for you, Blessed Mother, for the loving care you so generously give to all of us, your children. Most especially, we thank you for the gift of your Son, our Redeemer.
Merciful Mother, help us to follow Jesus in all our thoughts, words and actions this day. Stay close to us and hear our prayers—both spoken and unspoken.
“The Lamb who is at the center of the throne will lead us to the springs of the waters of life” (cf. Rev 7:17). St. Cecilia, pray for us. Teach us to sing God’s praise with kind and loving hearts.
We honor you, Blessed Mary, born without sin and wholly dedicated to the service of God’s people. Pray for us, your children, as we continue our synod process. Help us to listen prayerfully to God’s Word and to the voices of God’s people everywhere.
Parishes are hard at work feeding the poor and helping the environment - and some are getting creative in how they combine the two.

“He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him?” (Rom 8:32). Our Redeemer gives us everything we need to live as his disciples.
