What can these guys teach us about data center cooling?
A lot it turns out.
If you slip into icy water you are dead in 10 minutes.
But it's 10 below zero in Buffalo. Snow is coming in sideways.
How are these guys not dead?
The answer is simple. Air isnโt a very good cooling medium.
Air pulls heat away from the body very slowly. Water pulls heat away fast.
Thatโs why falling into icy water is lethal while standing shirtless in much colder air is survivable.
That same applies to cooling AI processors.
For decades, air cooling was good enough.
Chips were smaller. Power density was lower.
Blowing cool air over your chips was the strategy.
Its inefficient, but workable.
That era is over.
Modern AI systems concentrate enormous amounts of compute into very small spaces.
Power density keeps rising. Heat is generated faster than air can carry it away.
At that point, air cooling doesnโt fail because of bad engineering.
It fails because of physics.
Water cooling works for the same reason icy lakes are dangerous: water moves heat orders of magnitude more efficiently than air.
