Investigating the origin of multicellularity ꙮ in brown algae.
Once a zoologist (@CamZoology)
Our bryozoan paper, led by @Tom_Lewin and @ijyliao, is now out in @genomeresearch! We uncover extensive genome shuffling across the phylum and evidence supporting the Lophophorata hypothesis. Thanks to @darwintreelife for openly sharing the assemblies!

Just in case anyone is still here, check our latest preprint, right on time before the holiday season. We explored how transposable elements (TEs) diversify eukaryotic proteomes and found a cool case in nematode F-box genes.

Short 🧵 with highlights.
Accelerated computing is powering a new era in protein structure prediction, now with speed-of-light multiple sequence alignments.
#MMseqs2GPU now makes #AlphaFold2 predictions faster and more efficient than ever.

I am super happy my first first-author paper is out (https://t.co/ggIKpU09ob)! There’s even a thoughtful “news and views” along with it (https://t.co/0h9ZHV4gcb).
Here is my summary of our work in 20 tweets:
For me, the process of discovery was super fun. We used unique organisms and new technologies to test centuries-old hypotheses. If we flick through old textbooks with the possibilities of modern biology in mind, what else is there to find?
And of course, massive thanks to @HajkDrost for excellent supervision on bioinformatics, to transfer sequence information to evo-devo insights. He is now in Dundee and I recommend everyone to apply to his lab!

Does the aggregation of complex multicellularity follow a universal developmental pattern across the eukaryotic tree of life?
Thrilled to announce that we found a convergently evolved transcriptomic hourglass pattern in brown algal development. @Nature
