The Vogelherd Horse (Vogelherd Pferd) is one of the oldest examples of figurative art ever discovered in the world. It was created by Homo sapiens during the Upper Paleolithic and dates back approximately 32,000–35,000 years ago (Aurignacian period).

Carved entirely from mammoth ivory, it was discovered in 1931 by archaeologist Gustav Riek inside Vogelherd Cave, located in the Swabian Jura (southwestern Germany). This region is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The horse’s head remains intact, but its four legs and tail broke off and were lost over the millennia.
Its body and the back of its neck feature small cross-shaped incisions and finely engraved geometric marks. The meaning of these symbols is still a mystery, though they may have served ritual, magical, or cultural communication purposes.

The sculpture is housed at the Museum Schloss Hohentübingen at the University of Tübingen in Germany, where it is displayed alongside other extraordinary ivory carvings from the same cave, including prehistoric lions and mammoths.
