Nigeria is positioning itself at the forefront of West Africa’s renewable energy revolution, with four states signing solar mini-grid agreements on Tuesday, October 14, under a $3 billion renewable energy fund aimed at transforming the nation’s power sector.

The agreements were sealed in Abuja during the launch of the Nigerian Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF), a platform designed to foster investment and collaboration in clean energy.

While declaring the forum open, President Bola Tinubu said that “in the next three days, at least $400 million worth of contracts will be signed,” signaling a decisive shift away from Nigeria’s fragile national grid toward decentralized solar power systems, according to Business Insider Africa.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking alongside the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting local production.

“We are determined to reverse solar panel importation into Nigeria,” Shettima said, adding that strengthening domestic capacity will enable the country to reclaim control over its energy future.

At the forum’s opening, $435 million worth of renewable energy deals were officially signed under the Nigeria Solar Marketplace Initiative, spanning multiple states and marking a major leap toward energy independence and sustainability.
