🚨 SCIENTISTS JUST BUILT A FUEL CELL THAT RUNS DIRECTLY ON AMMONIA.
And it may solve one of the biggest problems in the hydrogen economy.
Hydrogen is incredibly powerful… but extremely difficult to store and transport.
Ammonia changes that.
Because unlike hydrogen gas… ammonia can be stored as a liquid using existing infrastructure.
Now researchers at KAIST have developed a new high-entropy catalyst that allows fuel cells to use ammonia directly while achieving world-class power and durability.
Why this matters:
• carbon-free electricity generation
• easier hydrogen transport
• long-duration energy storage
• future shipping fuel
• grid-scale clean power
• potential replacement for diesel generators
The breakthrough is the catalyst itself.
By mixing multiple metallic elements into a “high-entropy” structure… the system becomes far more stable under extreme heat and harsh ammonia conditions.
The fuel cell reportedly achieved:
world-class power density
over 255 hours stable operation
improved ammonia-to-hydrogen conversion
In simple terms:
They’re turning ammonia into electricity with far fewer losses than before.
But the deeper implication is bigger:
The future hydrogen economy may not actually transport hydrogen.
It may transport ammonia instead.
Because energy systems don’t just depend on efficiency… they depend on what civilization can realistically store, move, and scale globally.
