NDC is reportedly considering a merger with the ADC, now widely seen as the main opposition platform, following the recent court judgment that reversed an earlier ruling compelling INEC to register the party.
According to sources within the party, its leadership is keeping quiet over the far-reaching implications of the judgment, particularly for the hundreds of aspirants who have already purchased nomination and expression of interest forms to contest on the party’s platform.
With what could be a prolonged legal battle ahead, the party is yet to decide its next line of action. The uncertainty is already said to be pushing some aspirants to consider abandoning the party before an official decision is reached.
Sources further claim that Mr. Peter Obi may ultimately shelve his presidential ambition, while also ruling out any possibility of returning to the ADC.
None of these developments has been officially confirmed by the party or the individuals involved.
The Lokoja Federal High Court's decision to set aside its initial judgment that recognised the NDC is another reminder that no opposition party is immune when there is a concerted attempt to shrink the democratic space by the ruling party.
What we are witnessing is certainly unprecedented. Attempts to deregister political parties on the eve of an election is certainly the move of a dictatorship.
And, this is precisely why the opposition must stand together.
Divided, we are easy targets. But united, we can confront the growing monster of dictatorship and defend the constitutional right of Nigerians to freely choose their leaders. Democracy survives only when the opposition survives.
What is happening to Alhaji Bashir Saidu is another disturbing reminder of how justice can be stretched, twisted and weaponized when politics enters the courtroom.
A man was granted bail on a case. Later, he was re-arrested on the same matter. Now, after weeks of detention, he has once again been granted bail of ₦100 million. And the explanation Nigerians are expected to accept is that the matter was assigned to a new judge and must therefore start afresh.
How did we get here?
This is not the democracy many people claimed to have fought for. This is not the rule of law that citizens were promised. This is not justice moving with fairness and dignity. This is a system creating the appearance of punishment before conviction.
Nobody is saying Bashir Saidu is above the law. Nobody is saying any allegation should not be tested in court. But when a person is granted bail, re-arrested on the same matter, dragged through another round of uncertainty, and then granted another heavy bail, ordinary Nigerians are right to ask whether this is truly prosecution or persecution.
Bail should not become another form of detention.
Bail should not be designed to break people financially.
Bail should not be used as a political message.
Bail should be bail.
This is why many people continue to see the treatment of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and those around him as part of a wider political battle. The pattern is becoming too difficult to ignore. Former allies are now being treated like enemies. Institutions that should protect justice are beginning to look like instruments of pressure.
That is dangerous for democracy.
Today it is Bashir Saidu. Today it is Mallam El-Rufai. Tomorrow it can be anyone who falls out with those in power.
A justice system that appears selective cannot command public trust. A democracy where people are punished by process before conviction is a democracy in trouble. The law must be firm, but it must also be fair. It must not bend according to political convenience.
We demand justice for Bashir Saidu.
We demand justice for Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
Let the courts work without intimidation. Let evidence speak without propaganda. Let due process prevail without political bitterness.
Because when bail begins to look like punishment, and prosecution begins to look like persecution, then democracy itself is the one on trial.

“When we were all joining the ADC, Victor Umeh spoke to me and made it clear that the only chance the Igbo people have is to work with the North, and for our brother, Peter Obi, to become Vice President to Atiku Abubakar.” — Kenneth Okonkwo
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE ATIKU MOVEMENT (TAM)
PRESS STATEMENT
Date: June 1, 2026
BABACHIR LAWAL’S BITTER RANT: THE DESPERATE GASPS OF A DISGRACED, CORRUPT BIGOT
The attention of The Atiku Movement (TAM) has been drawn to a vitriolic, incoherent, and malicious statement authored by the disgraced former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, circulating on social media.
Babachir Lawal attempts to cover up his political irrelevance and exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by launching an unprovoked, defamatory, and brutally malicious attack on the person of His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Let it be known to all Nigerians that Babachir’s resort to blackmail, insults, and wild conspiracy theories is nothing more than the classic tantrums of a political mercenary who has lost his grip on relevance.
A Reminder of Who Babachir Lawal Truly Is: The SGF of Corruption
Before Babachir Lawal attempts to lecture Nigerians on "competence," "evil," or "good governance," we must refresh his selective amnesia and remind the public of the foundational rot that defines his public career.
Babachir Lawal holds the legendary, shameful distinction of being the first high-ranking official of the Buhari administration to be unceremoniously sacked for stomach-churning corruption.
This is a man who choice-fed on the misery of fellow Nigerians, using his office to divert funds meant for the feeding, shelter, and rehabilitation of displaced victims of terrorism in the North East.
The "Grass-Cutting" Scandal: Nigerians have not forgotten how Babachir’s company, Rholavision Engineering Ltd, was awarded a multi-million naira contract to clear "invasive plant species" (grass cutting) at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.
Indictment and Sack: Following a damning investigation by the Senate and a presidential panel, he was found guilty of violating the Code of Conduct for public officers, leading to his ignominious sack as SGF.
EFCC Prosecution: He was subsequently arrested and dragged before the Federal High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on multiple counts of fraud and criminal conspiracy.
For a man whose legacy is explicitly tied to stealing resources meant for dying orphans and widows in IDP camps to talk about "conscience" is the ultimate height of hypocrisy. Babachir has no moral right to speak where honorable men gather.
The Face of Religious and Tribal Bigotry:
A close reading of Babachir’s statement reveals the true source of his animosity. His bitter essay is laced with deep-seated, toxic ethno-religious hatred. By weaponizing terms like "irredentist Fulani" and "religious hegemonists," Babachir has fully unmasked himself as a tribal bigot and a religious extremist.
Babachir Lawal’s hatred for Atiku Abubakar is not based on principles, policies, or politics. It is a primal, venomous hatred driven purely by the fact that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a proud Muslim and a Fulani man. Babachir cannot stomach the democratic reality that a Muslim Fulani possesses the national appeal, network, and capability to salvage Nigeria. He prefers to see the nation burn through the lenses of division rather than accept a pan-Nigerian leader who transcends ethnic boundaries.
Setting the Record Straight on Atiku Abubakar:
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar's democratic credentials stand tall, untouchable by the mud-slinging of a displaced political jobber.
A Proven Democrat: Atiku Abubakar has consistently subjected himself to the democratic process, building alliances across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Unlike Babachir, who thrives in backroom conspiracies and corrupt contract inflation, Atiku builds bridges.
A Unifier: Atiku’s vision for Nigeria has always been inclusive, aimed at rescuing the nation from the economic ruin and insecurity that characterises the present day, issues that Babachir’s former administration helped lay the foundation for...
BREAKING: The North is on fire politically, as someone has reportedly translated the famous “Yes Daddy” conversation between Peter Obi and Bishop Oyedepo into Hausa and distributed it across mosques in Kano.
Nigerian politician Peter Obi will run for president in the West African nation’s January elections, ensuring that the opposition to incumbent Bola Tinubu will once again be fragmented https://t.co/xNczHDLYgC

Mallam @elrufai Has Now Spent 100 Days In Regime Custody & Still Counting 💥💥💥💥💥💥
One of the last fearless, very bold and intellectually gifted Northern leaders who helped bring this regime to power has now been in regime custody for 100 days
His bail applications has been rejected multiple times or given extremely impossible bail condition never seen in the history of Nigerian judiciary since independence
🔥He spent the entire Ramadan fasting in detention
🔥Performed the Eid el Fitr in @icpcnigeria captivity
🔥Temporary released to bury his mother and recaptured
🔥Today mark his 100 days in captivity and he is spending his Eid al Adha there denied the opportunity of performing the Eid prayers
Whether this will break the man known for his resilience and strong mental prowess is left to be seen
But one thing is clear, @elrufai is the last man standing from the North that has used facts and figures to expose the regime
I join millions of Nigerians in wishing his excellency @elrufai Eid Mubarak and demand his immediate release, respect for his constitutionally guaranteed rights and rule of law
