Here's a common situation you run into as a new aspiring entrepreneur.
You're thinking of starting a business but you're unsure of yourself.
You decide to gain some knowledge from someone who is a few steps a head of you.
- You hire a coach
- You take a course
- You read some books
You believe this will help you feel more confident in your entrepreneurial journey.
It makes sense. Entrepreneurship can be scary. You're taking a big leap of faith by betting on yourself and starting a business.
You want to make sure you're properly equipped for the journey.
But then this happens...
After reading the books, taking the courses, and listening to your coach, you apply everything you've learned and...
You don't see the results you were expecting.
So you begin to question yourself.
"Is it me?"
"Am I not working hard enough?
"Am I not smart enough for this?
If you've been working with a coach, they may even try to deflect the blame for your lack of results away from them and put it on you.
This is a very common scenario. Don't feel bad if it's happened to you.
And here's why it happens...
THERE IS NO SET REPEATABLE ROADMAP FOR BUSINESS SUCCESS.
Read that again ☝️
If there was, we'd see WAY more successful businesses all around. But the stats don't lie. Most new businesses fail!
Why?
Take a look at success stories from people, products, and businesses throughout history, & you'll find serendipity actually played a large part in their success.
- A lucky break
- A chance encounter
- An accidental invention
The Slinky, Post-it Notes, Play Doh, Velcro, Silly Puddy and countless other products were invented completely by accident or happenstance.
Sara Blakely, Joy Mangano, and Richard Branson all created wildly successful products and companies that were sparked from bad experiences.
So now what?
Just wing it?
Or don't try at all?
Nope, there's actually good news here (I promise).
Although much of business success is outside of your control, you DO play a large in helping to increase your luck surface area.
When you focus on:
- Meeting new people
- Sharing lots of new ideas
- Testing and iterating on ideas
- Being curious to seek out different perspectives
Your world opens up...and new unintended opportunities come your way.
If you study each of these accidental success stories (I study them fanatically) you'll see that's what was happening leading up to the Happy Accident moment (as I call it).
They were setting the stage.
Then? When their moment struck?
They had the courage to capitalize on those Happy Accidents that came their way.
So, what's the point of this long post, Dennis?
It's this.
- Stop wracking your brain about what process you need to be following that will 10X your business.
- Stop beating yourself up if the 'guaranteed system' isn't working for you.
Instead.
Focus on setting the stage. Be open and ready for the happy accidents that fall into your lap. And be ready to pounce when they do.
I'm not personally attracted to posts and stories about how awesome someone is.
Show me the trials you had to go through, the mistakes you made, and the tough lessons you had to learn.
That's what hooks me in.
Where all my non hustle culture folks at?
I’m looking to connect with more people who have a long term mindset and a passion for creating time freedom.
NOT living your most productive life every day and working 24/7 on your business in search of a 7 figure exit.
Show yourselves!
I first posted this clip on August 21st, 2023.
I was warning of a coming recession where millions of people would find themselves out of work.
I said, "Start now. Start building that second income stream before you find yourself on the unemployment rolls."
Well, it's started. But it's not too late for you. You can start building today. It takes time, all good things do.
But you're not doing yourself any favors by waiting. The clock is ticking.
My journey has seen me do the following (in this order)
1 - consulting
2 - book (for my consulting clients)
3 - digital product (for my consulting clients)
4 - speaking (within my consulting niche)
5 - coaching
6 - book (for my coaching clients)
7 - digital products (for my coaching clients)
8 - speaking (within my coaching niche)
9 - newsletter
That has taken me 5+ years.
It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Thank you @thesaraloretta@Jason_Stapleton@dennis_geelen@adriana_tica@SeanPHogue and @bradlongco for hosting and participating in the @SoloCreatorHQ Solo Creator Summit.
I gleaned a lot of valuable insights from the webinar.
Now it's time to actually apply them.
For those who didn't get a chance to attend, here are a few takeaways and observations I gleaned from the event.
1. Dennis is a wonderful host and has a knack for summarizing information.
He asked a question, listened intently to what was being said, and then succinctly summarized the guest's response before moving on to the next topic. That summary is worth its weight in gold. It is a wonderful way to transition between topics and made the webinar really easy to follow.
2. No one's path is exactly the same.
There were similarities and similar processes, but at the end of the day, each person on the panel took a different route to get where they were. Learn from the experts and APPLY their knowledge, but don't become hung up on the fact that there is only ONE way to do something.
3. Many won't complete your course in its entirety.
Some people will pay exorbitant amounts of money for a course or product and will never touch it after that. For the rest of your customers finding a way to get people to complete your content is your holy grail.
I learned of two approaches to help with this.
First, get very specific with a problem and a solution.
Instead of having the ultimate course on entrepreneurship that is 900 modules long. You can focus on one specific portion of that journey.
For example: "How to A/B split test email subject lines for better open rates." is a much easier course to market, apply, and action than "The Ultimate Guide to Everything for Everyone."
Second, don't be afraid to incorporate additional forms of teaching into your course.
I learned that mixing in webinars, 1 on 1 coaching, and group cohorts with do-it-yourself modules is a great way to increase completion rates if you have the aptitude and time.
4. Spend time speaking to your customers and network before you spend months or years building a course that no one wants to buy.
If your intent is to sell a product you need to have someone to sell to. It is better to get feedback early and often than to spend months building something that you are passionate about but doesn't serve a need.
5. Qualify your leads before you sell to them.
Using a well-crafted "this product is not for you if" section will help to ensure that your customers are the right people to buy from you.
6. Learning how people learn and how to teach is an underrated skill.
I'd wager that it is just as important as any other skill set mentioned on X today. If you take time to understand how people like to learn, and that it isn't one size fits all, that will be a huge benefit to any product or course that you create.
This doesn't even cover 1% of the information that was shared in the webinar.
I would highly recommend following everyone mentioned above and signing up for the next webinar when it goes live.
Thank you again to everyone who participated.
