A quick HAPPY post…mostly. For those unaware, in Oct 2024, first, I lost my precious feline Soulmate, Dr Kitty Leela. Days later, I was diagnosed with my first, still unruptured aneurysm. I was told I likely wouldn’t make it to Christmas 2024. In Jan last year, they offered to do an extremely risky surgery to repair my Basilar artery. I was born with 2 rare genetic disorders which combine to form degenerative connective tissue disease…which includes my arteries and veins. My precious son passed 4 years ago from a similar aneurysm. After more tests, 2 more aneurysms in the same artery were found. My granddaughter, my only grandchild, was due in March. “It’s a 73% risk of complications or death..but it’s your only hope to meet your grandchild. As you can see in my avatar, I have “met” Alice Sophia numerous times now.
I’m a quality over quantity person. I would rather die than live in a nursing home the rest of my life.
Somehow, I’m still here. I had gotten off twitter at my girls, best friend and doctor’s requests..because “high stress or you getting upset WILL rupture the aneurysms.
I worked in emergency rooms, disaster management and medical research most of my life. I THRIVE on stress. And with my country falling apart at the broken seams; I can’t keep my mouth shut.
Oh, I also adopted another very sick kitten, who like Leela, wasn’t supposed to live. That was in April. I named her Xīwàng, we call her Xixi for short. Considering both of us, I felt HOPE was a good name! My Grumpy Gremlin (what my girls call her), has a cleft palate, a heart defect and asthma. She definitely keeps me busy! She is SPOILED ROTTEN..😂🥰😹. She’s not very affectionate, like Leela was..but she LOVES people, especially my girls and..my landlord. His wife teases him when he’s here saying he’s with “another woman”. 😂🥰. If I pass away before Xixi, my WONDERFUL landlords are taking her. Anyways, THIS is my life update and some photos. My girls still plan on leaving the country after I am gone…sometimes I wish the aneurysms would just rupture!
My uncle Bob, a retired Catholic priest (who spent over 55 years in Bolivia, Ecuador..and Venezuela, working with the indigenous peoples, building schools, hospitals, community farms..and TRYING to protect them from exploitation.), at 90yrs old, lectured me about wanting to die…but..I am terrified for my girls. Uncle Bob himself isn’t doing well this week, worried about his “family” in Venezuela. I’ll be off and on.

The reason Western populations keep voting for politicians who promise to stop immigration while their economies quietly depend on immigrant labor is not hypocrisy.

It is the logical behavior of people caught between two things they need and can only admit to needing one of.

They need the labor.

The hospitals don't run without it. The farms don't produce without it. The delivery economy doesn't function without it.

They need the story.

The story that they built this themselves. That the prosperity is native. That the abundance is earned and not, in any part, extracted.

Complete and utter nonsense. If you knew anything about China, you would know that stability (稳定) means everything to Chinese people.

Throughout their 5,000 year history China was nothing but unstable (不稳定). Dynasties rose and fell for thousands of years until the current Chinese government came to power and established that stability for the nation.

You might not like that (we all know you hate it) but it doesn’t matter what you and I, both outsiders in China, think about the government. China is for Chinese people and their government is one of the most supported governments in the world, because it offers that stability.

You are simply a war monger and trying to push propaganda that China wants to take over the world and therefore is a threat to US interests. This is completely false and both nations needs each other and should be working with each other.

This story is immensely touching and is going massively viral in China. It's also a pretty good soft signal that China is taking warming ties with the U.S. sincerely.

This lady 👇 is called Yin Yuzhen (殷玉珍) and she lives in a place called Jǐngbèitáng (井背塘) in Inner Mongolia - deep in the heart of the Mu Us (毛乌素) Desert, a place whose name literally translates from Mongolian as "bad (lacking) water".

In 1985, aged 19, she and her husband were really desperate by the encroaching desert: sandstorms would seal their door shut overnight and literally threaten to bury them alive. She was crying every day and considered ending her life.

However, her defiant spirit prevailed and she decided to fight the desert, saying she'd "rather die planting trees than let the sand bully me to death" (宁可种树累死，也不让沙子欺负死)

In 1986, they traded the family's most valuable possession - a sheep - for 600 tree seedlings. Fewer than 10 survived, but they saw hope. Her husband Bái Wànxiáng (白万祥) took manual labor jobs and asked for tree seedlings instead of wages.

In 1999, Yin Yuzhen's story made it into national news on CCTV. An American named Ronald Sakolsky - originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - who was teaching English as a foreign instructor at Luoyang Foreign Language School (洛阳外国语学校) in Henan province, was deeply moved. He immediately started sending emails to multiple American organizations to raise $5,000 for her.

The $5,000 was sent through a Beijing-based foundation. In the video 👇, Yin Yuzhen recalls receiving it: "I had never seen that much money in my life - it scared me half to death." She spent every cent on higher-quality seedlings than she'd ever been able to afford.

Shortly after, Sakolsky traveled to the Mu Us desert in person. He found her out in the sand, planting. Seeing green where he'd expected only desert, he kept saying "impossible, impossible."

With Sakolsky's $5,000 alone, Yin Yuzhen planted 50,000 seedlings which have now become a forest. Over her entire life, since the 1980s, her life's work stands at over two million trees planted, transforming almost 50 km² (roughly 80% of Manhattan) of desert into green land.

Yin Yuzhen was awarded the 全国劳模 (National Model Worker), one of China's highest civilian honors.

Seeing her video titled 寻找赛考斯 ("Searching for Sakolsky") and the incredible impact it was having on Chinese social media, journalists from Inner Mongolia's Benteng Media (奔腾融媒) tracked Sakolsky down by going to the Luoyang No. 2 Foreign Language Academy and finding the Headmaster Bai Fan, who was Sakolsky's former colleague.

Bai Fan connected with Sakolsky by phone on the spot, shot on video by the journalists (my 2nd video 👇), inviting him back to China to see what his $5,000 became.

This was 2 days ago on May 17th so you can bet that a Sakolsky visit to China will be arranged soon and that this will be one of the biggest pieces of US-China public diplomacy this year.

Now this story coming out and being amplified right after Trump's visit is of course no coincidence, we shouldn't be naive: what better way to translate the warmth from the visit than letting a desert grandmother in a red headscarf tell the internet she's looking for her American friend?

That doesn't make the story any less real or any less touching. In fact this story is the perfect reminder that countries don't have friends, but people do. And when countries remember this, deserts turn green.
