Before entering public life, Dr. Hamm served his community as a family physician for over 30 years. I feel qualified to chime in here.

Being middle class is a relatively new thing for most of the developing world. A table full of food feels luxurious to the Thai, the Turk, the Arab, the Indian, in a way westerners don’t quite grasp. Hunger is too far distant from our psyche.

I look at a table like this and I see gluttony and waste. The Turk feels content with the feast laid out before him. The table laden with food represents success to him in the same way westerners view a well manicured lawn or a decent wine collection. They are still at the safety stage of industrialization. Westerners want self-actualization.

Carney just handed Canada’s $100B submarine fleet to Germany’s TKMS over South Korea’s Hanwha. Announced in Halifax, hours before he flies to the NATO summit in Turkey.

This isn’t really about which sub is better. It’s about NATO math. Germany argued Hanwha doesn’t have the same NATO connectivity, and Pistorius has already floated pooling German, Norwegian, and Canadian subs into a combined fleet of up to 24.

Translation: Canada is buying into Europe’s orbit at the exact moment the US is stepping back from NATO.

South Korea offered more money. $70B+ in trade and investment, tens of thousands of jobs a year, a $200M lifeline for Algoma Steel. Germany won anyway.

I think Carney got this one wrong. Hanwha’s package was bigger and would have actually diversified us into the Indo-Pacific instead of doubling down on Europe. We keep talking about reducing reliance on the US and building new partnerships, then pick the safe NATO choice when a real alternative was on the table.
